Hmm, I just got this message from Atri, who I've seen looks at this list. I haven't migrated my bugzilla account because I don't want to continue to use the old account name. I just tried to respond and it wants details I cannot supply (I don't know what username/password are - I've never needed them - my browser supposedly knows them but apparently can't reproduce whatever information is required to respond to the 'migration portal') But more fundamentally, I don't use TW. [opensuse] Automounting removable disks

A while back I posted a question about using /dev/disk/by-path to mount drives. I have udev rules to initiate a mount when a disk is inserted. My worry at the time was that the by-path values were not constant for a specific drive bay. I have since verified that these are constant and correct. Activity in a specific drive bay always has the same by-path value. I should be able to mount a disk in a specific drive bay at the same place. However, the drives are still not being mounted correctly. I am using udev. It seems that one must use systemd-mount when mounting drives in udev rules. So I am doing that. My udev rule runs a small script that lists where the by-path entry is pointing (e.g., sdm1) before the systemd-mount command runs. I can verify that the by-path entry is pointing to the correct sdX entry. However, the systemd-mount command mounts some other sdX, not the one it should - the one that is pointed to. It is also not the old value from a previous drive in that drive bay. It seems random. Or at least I have not seen a pattern. Sample udev rule (on one line in the rule file called 99-hydra-disk-array.rules): ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="block", ENV{ID_PATH}=="pci-0000:b3:00.0-sas-exp0x5003048020cc467f-phy5-lun-0", ENV{ID_PART_ENTRY_NUMBER}=="1", RUN+="/damount %E{ID_PATH}-part1 a 1" There are 24 rules, one for each drive bay, In this rule, the by-path is pci-0000:b3:00.0-sas-exp0x5003048020cc467f-phy5-lun-0, and I want partition 1. It should be mounted on /array/a1 Script it runs (/damount): #!/bin/sh DEV=$1 COL=$2 ROW=$3 DISK=$COL$ROW /usr/bin/mkdir -p /array/$DISK ls -l /dev/disk/by-path/$DEV >> /tmp/damount.log /usr/bin/systemd-mount --no-block /dev/disk/by-path/$DEV /array/$DISK # This does not work at all # mount /dev/disk/by-path/$DEV /array/$DISK I see in /tmp/damount.log that the by-path is pointing to a new sdx1 value. But it is some other sdx1 that is mounted. The commented mount command in the script is what one might think they could use. But in the udev rule, when it is used, nothing gets mounted. So we use systemd-mount This is on leap 15.1. I really do not know how to proceed. I can't see what I can do to make the mount command not mount what it is told to mount. The system journal shows the expected sdX value when the disk is inserted. But the mount is something else. I suspect some systemd issue. But where? Could there be some issue if one inserts multiple disks at the same time that confuses systemd-mount? The by-path and where it points is correct when multiple disks are inserted (as listed by the udev rule). So the confusion must be elsewhere. And all that's left is systemd-mount... All, I look at 15.2 and I have this pipewire process at the top of top. I didn't start it, nor did I ask for it to be started. I check the systemd services and there is no pipewire service -- but that process is running away. I know it is some type of media service I don't want or need. How do I turn it off? -- David C. [opensuse] A (probably totally ignorant) DNS question

Hello! [os Leap 15.2, xfce, Network Manager, Firefox 78.3.0esr, IPV4 only] A (probably totally ignorant) DNS question: which resolver(s) will this system be actually using? A system has an Arris SURFboard cable modem, SBG7400AC2. This is a AC2350Mbps combined router/modem. Though it's owned, the ISP can and does change the firmware not so infrequently (docsis 3). This modem has a firmware option to turn off the ISP's two resolvers and enter my own resolvers (up to three) but doing so is flakey: change it, save/reload, and the ISP's resolver addresses return to the display. In frustration I removed it from the power line. I got busy with something else and didn't get back to this for about 6 hours. Plugged in the power and, hello, my own resolver addresses were now displayed in the 'change resolver' section as the current running set. Good. But the section of the router/modem firmware that displays the current 'System Information' still displays the ISP's resolvers. Network Manager's gui (right-click) 'Connection Information' displays my chosen resolvers in the order I set them in the modem/router firmware. In dhclient.conf I have a 'prepend domain-name-servers' with the wanted resolvers (in reverse order so I can tell effect if any) but it appears this isn't being imposed. In Network Manager's gui 'Edit Connection / Editing ... / IPV4 Settings / Additional DNS servers' I have not added anything, but here's another place to set resolvers. Finally, I have set Firefox's 'DNS over HTTPS' option which says it will use Cloudflare for resolver. SO... there are apparently way too many ways to set a resolver, all seemingly independent of each other. Which one overrules the others? I'm thinking it's the Mozilla/Cloudflare thing for any DNS queries going through Firefox browser. But which resolver gets used for queries not going through Firefox browser? I'm wondering if the ISP's docsis tinkering may be the final overriding one (he who controls the firmware controls the world...) I posted the solution some days ago, again last night, and you were given it in the Forums thread a month ago: Install the epson inkjet package (epson-inkjet-printer-escpr) with YaST/Software Management. That package includes a large number of drivers provided by Epson, including your WP-4530. How to find that package? The Search function in YaST/Software Mgmt. Type in "epson". Description: "The ESC/P-R driver works as a filter program used with CUPS. It offers high quality printing with Seiko Epson color inkjet printers. This driver can only be used with printers that support the Epson ESC/P-R language." That would be your printer. This is confirmed by looking in the package file list with YaST. Once this package is installed, YaST/Printer will see these drivers and should offer Epson-WP-4530_Series-epson-escpr-en.ppd.gz, your driver installation file. Doug, given the mess, I offer this editorial (which I'll likely be scolded for by the list): You are gonna have a lot of frustration if you continue to do so much directly from inside the guts with arcane commands that many if not most on this list have worked with for decades. For many here, this stuff is second nature. What we don't know, we know how to find out, and usually quickly. We know how to fix things w/o breaking them (well, most of the time). But you don't really have a handle on the theory-of-operation. You don't know the tools. You try to follow advice by rote but w/o really understanding what you're doing, so errors are frequent. This makes things much more difficult than necessary. Tools like YaST - for my money, the best Linux admin toolset - were created not just to make life easier for old farts like me (40 yrs with system hw/sw) but to enable folks like you to get the same benefits w/o having to actually be a nerd. Finally, re PCLOS: Tex put together a nice little distro using various pieces he likes and he controls that tightly; more power to him. I can see why that might have been a good fit for you. Or possibly Ubuntu/Kubuntu, where users commonly use the command line to do things they don't understand. But openSUSE, like cousin Fedora, is a very different animal. Yet you are down in the openSUSE bowels before having learned the basics. And so consequently - notwithstanding your request re no lecture - please reconsider and do yourself (and others) a favor and move to Leap; you can still get most of the latest & greatest if you just learn what the add-on repo's and OBS are about. Why on earth do you care about the newest kernel and the like? For now, give Leap a try. Learn YaST. Learn your DE. You can always move to TW later if you discover a real need. Occam's razor. [opensuse] dual boot leap 15.2 ans win-10 issues

This box has a 3 bay Sata rack. I can put the 15.2 SSD in any of the 3 bays and boot/run just fine. I have a windows 10 disk built on said box, with it and only it, installed in the normal slot. IE, the BIOS denotes it as "P0". The windows disk will only boot up in that "P0" bay. Not any of the other 2 bays. Some sort of disk I/O error is shown. No other disks installed. With the win 10 disk installed in the second bay, it is detected by "grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg". And an entry in there in the boot menu. But I get the same I/O error as when it was the only disk installed. I know this is not a windows forum but why can't I boot this win-10 disk in any other sata bay other than the one the bios says is "P0"? Some applications seem to be only placeable on the panel, even tho I want them on the desktop. One I'm thinking of right now is ConvertAll. Is there a way to change this behavior? openSUSE folks, What is up with the "download" button on a buildservice page. You click download, say at: https://build.opensuse.org/package/binaries/home:MihailJP/prename/openSUSE_… No download occurs and you are taken to the basic buildservice home page: https://build.opensuse.org/ WTF?? I know where the home repos are on download.o.o, but someone unfamiliar with how download.o.o is laid out would just be redirected to the home page without any download wondering what went wrong. I do not recall this ever happening before. As soon as the user clicks the "download" button, the file should immediately download? No? -- David C.
