[opensuse] HP only prints on HP paper

I have a deskjet F2280. Normal photocopy paper works fine. To get high quality prints, I have to use HP paper. It will not feed any other (I have tried kodak and epson which I'd like to use). Printer setup by yast. OS 11.2 with KDE 3.4.5 Is there any way I can fool it into thinking it's HP paper? [opensuse] KDE defaults after upgrade from 10.3 to 11.2

I did an update of a 10.3 system to openSUSE 11.2. I used the 11.2 DVD to do this (not zypper). As part of the update, I let the updater add the on-line 11.2 updates. No KDE repos are added. Just the 11.2 update that the install adds. For the most part all went well. Except that the desktop looks crappy, even for a user created after the update was completed. The most obvious problem is that the panel at the bottom is black, and the text on it black. Or, when leaving the desktop, the window is black with black text. ICONS are OK. There is something that is obviously not to plan. I also tried deleting the $HOME/.kde and $HOME/.kde4 directories, hoping that they would be better when the user logs in again. Nope. Same badness. Maybe this is not enough to remove to force regeneration of the user settings? Oddly, the root user has a correct appearance. No other user. I am guessing that when the system was updated, the default settings that a KDE user should get have not been properly updated. I do not know where to look for this, if that is even what it is. I am guessing that I could fiddle with a user's settings and get it looking good again. However, this is not really an option for this machine. We are trying to see how well it works to let users log with Windows Active Directory verification (which works so very nicely!). I would have to do this for each user after they create their login. Umm, no... I did follow many of the discussions about settings problems in kde 4. Most of those seemed to be about messing up old settings, and seemed to be more of an issue in older KDE 4 releases. I sort of thought the KDE in the 11.2 update directory had most of this sorted out. I use it on my 11.2-from-the-beginning system and have no complaints. I am guessing the damage was done in the initial KDE install in the 11.2 upgrade. But I might be wrong. [opensuse] KMail suddenly opens links with Quanta instead of Firefox

Running SLED 11 with Gnome. Using Kmail as mail client. Installed Quanta Plus 3.5.9 for web authoring. Now Kmail uses Quanta to open URL's instead of Firefos as i used to. I cant seem to find the place where Kmail stores what software to use. Gnome is set to use Firefox. -- /Rikard Johnels

Hi: I just bought this printer, thinking it would work right out of the box. I'm running SUSE 9.3 with CUPS, and it does not seem to support this model. Anybody got this printer to work? Any pointers would help. Best regards. -- Alfredo Cole-Tuckler

[opensuse] kde3 - all control panel apps are still gone

Will, Dotan, All, On my 11.0 kde3 install, all control panel apps disappeared a few weeks ago and haven't returned. I have made a number of attempts to find out why and tried all the suggestions from the last thread, but still no joy. Worse, some packages failed to download and install and I'm not sure how to list them (kdebase did not install, but got it on a second round). One of the things that fails is kcontrol: it is empty. What package should contain the gadgets inside? I need at least to define the language (my intention on installing kde3 is for using kbabel, that runs, but defaults to en_US). [opensuse] Gnome 11.0 - mime types messed up (all plain text) -- update-mime-database errors

Guys, Something has screwed up the mime database in gnome so that now gnome things all documents are "plain text document" mime types. I have tried 'update-mime-database /usr/share/mime' and it returned the following errors: [15:17 alchemy:/usr/share/mime] # update-mime-database /usr/share/mime Unknown media type in type 'all/all' Unknown media type in type 'all/allfiles' Unknown media type in type 'uri/mms' Unknown media type in type 'uri/mmst' Unknown media type in type 'uri/mmsu' Unknown media type in type 'uri/pnm' Unknown media type in type 'uri/rtspt' Unknown media type in type 'uri/rtspu' Unknown media type in type 'fonts/package' Unknown media type in type 'interface/x-winamp-skin' I suspect that the above type don't exist and that is causing the whole mime database update to fail leaving everything set to 'plain text document'. [opensuse] Keeping the monitor turned on

Hi - This may be more appropriate to the KDE group but seems like this is a better place to ask as this may be a system level issue... Running SuSE11.2 with KDE 4.4.2 I want the ability to leave my monitor up with the display turned on indefinitely, for my media center, especially when I am playing music and running a visualization program. I have tried to go into the KDE System Settings and turned off all the power management schemes, PowerDevil etc. This is a desktop system so battery mode is not an option. Yet something is insisting on turning off the monitor after a few minutes of "inactivity" I have look elsewhere (Sax, nvidia manager etc) and cannot find anything else which might be also trying to configure a timeout on the display.. So how do I keep the display up and running? Thanks for any and all ideas offered! Marc..

[opensuse] USB Webcam audio problem on Linux

Wonder if the lack of answers to my latest post (in attach) is because nobody use Philips USB Webcams with embedded microphone, or because this appears to be a know bug of Linux kernel, which is not yet resolved. How is it possible that Linux nowaday, still lacks on this kind of driver problems? Note: I said *Linux*, since I noticed exactly the same issue also on Ubuntu and Fedora. [opensuse] KDE 4.4: Keyboard interface: File-save panel saves prematurely

The standard file-save panel used by both Opera and Firefox does not give me a chance to select the subdirectory. When I put the cursor on a subdirectory and press Enter, I expect the panel to display the subdirectory contents. Instead, the panel saves the file immediately, under the directory. The panel works properly when I use the mouse and click on the subdirectory.
