NTP set up in YAST is loosing time

Hi, I have used NTP in previous SUSE 9.X, but on 9.3 I used YAST to set up NTP. YASTs dialog says that it will sync to a time server at bootup. In the past I am sure that the local PC was re-sync'd quite often. I rarely ever saw a difference of more than a second between my "Atomic" wall clock or watch. But now I see the PCs time getting more and more 'off' the longer it has been booted. This is irritating and non-intuitive. The systems should stay in sync with the 'official' time servers. One should NOT have to re-boot just to get the clock back in sync. Is the a way to tell the system to regularly 'sync up'? Has anyone out there found a way to keep a 9.3 system time accurate? PeterB

Touchpad

Hi, I have a Acer Aspire 3022WLMi Laptop with a Synaptics touchpad. If I install ksynaptic I can configure a lot of features, but I can't make the touchpad recognize a finger tap as a click. If I uninstall ksynaptic everything works again. Somebody else with this problem? If I use YaST to configure the display, sometimes I get very strange values for HorizSync and VertRefresh. If I switch to runlevel 3 and run sax2 the detection works better. I tried to activate the internal modem by loading snd-atiixp-modem, but it always complains: ALSA sound/pci/ac97/ac97_codec.c:2060: MC' 97 1 converters and GPIO not ready (0xff00) It doesn't matter wether I load the snd-atiixp module before or after snd-atiixp-modem. If I remove snd-atiixp-modem and use hsfmodem, it works. Has anyone made snd-atiixp-modem work? -- mdc

Why is it everytime you boot into Suse10, that the time is different, the time zone doesn't change. Jim

When I executed the file NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7667-pkg1.run it said there was no matching driver found and offered to compile it for me -- which worked just fine. I am running the SMP kernel. Don't know if that is why it couldn't find the driver. # uname -a Linux paulsen 2.6.11.4-21.8-smp #1 SMP Tue Jul 19 12:42:37 UTC 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux If you examine the executable you will see that it is a script file with some binary drivers embedded into it. The text portion of the file lists the supported kernels and the list doesn't include the latest SuSE kernel (smp or not). The script then checks the Nvidia ftp server and can't find it there either. For the compile to work, you do need to first install the kernel source and do the following, as root: # cd /usr/src/linux # make cloneconfig # make prepare

ftp.gwdg.de really slow recently?

Hi, I have been using the apt repositories at ftp.gwdg.de for a while now. I have never had any problems with them. However, I have been observing lately that it has become really slow in the last month or so. Does anyone share this experience? Does anyone have any recommendation for a ftp mirror (preferably in us) that is updated reasonably quickly and has apt repositories mirrored? thanks, -- Osho

What are people using for anti-virus software? I've got BitDefender running on my machine, but I'd like to find something zero-cost that has a nice GUI so that when I set up boxes for friends and family, they can use it. Regularly (and automatically) updated virus definitions are a must, here. Dave

YOU security update error

Hi SuSEWatcher tells me that new security updates are available so I run Yast>Online Update But I get an error: Retrieving acroread: "Adobe Reader for PDF Files" ... Retry Retrieving acroread: "Adobe Reader for PDF Files" ... Aborted ERROR(You:RPM has invalid signature.) Any ideas how to get rid of this?

usbnet not automatic loaded

Hi, i install super suse, but i have a SB4200 cable modem, that was detected but do not loaded the driver ( SB1000 ), i just get into Yast and put the driver manually, but it doesn't work, because the module "usbnet" is not loaded at boot time, now i have to load it manually every time i boot ( modprobe usbnet ), is that a bug ?? can i fix it ?? Feature wishlist: Comment on Separate partitions for /root and /home directories as installation default

This is my comment on the following feature: http://www.opensuse.org/Feature_Wishlist#Separate_partitions_for_.2Froot_an… The problem here is that we would need an algorithm that does this in the proper way. Here're some questions: * How large should / be in comparison to /home? * Should / have x % of the free space? * What is the minimal size of / ? * What is the minimal size of /home ? If somebody comes up with an algorithm and people agree that it's the right way to go, then I'll talk to our yast folks and try to get it implemented at some time.
