[opensuse-project] Doing openSUSE for older people

Hello folks! I work together with some older people (60-70 years of life) and try to teach them some computer knowledge. I also say often that it will be easier to use a Linux-distro like openSUSE. So I ask myself, how I can say these people that openSUSE is better (easier) for them then Windows. They use Windows 7 and sometimes their are some really big problems they can´t fix by themselves. So they ask me. I think that openSUSE is easier for them because you just need to update your packages and don´t download a new exe-file for keep your system up-to-date. Hi, When the roadmap was discussed, I said we would decide on the version number when we have a clearer picture about what would make up the new version. So as Milestone5 is on the mirrors and I'm myself preparing for christmas holidays, I wonder: what's your oppinion on the version number? I myself prefer 11.4, but I have no strong objection against 12.0 if this is what the majority wants. Hi all, A while ago Izabel and myself started an article on a few new initiatives in openSUSE. We recently moved it over to Etherpad so others could get involved - and get involved they did. Helen and Yaloki already offered help and review so I think this part will work out. Hey Peepz, just to let you and the election officials know I want to run for the openSUSE Board again. Since the conference after the last we started to transform the Board from a group of people who had no real idea what they are supposed to do (only what they are not supposed to do) into an entity of democratic elected representatives of our Members that tries to tackle the important project wide challenges. We took a stand for the independence of this project with the first steps towards a Foundation, we pushed to clarify the direction we are heading to with getting the Strategy rolling and we took care of the growth of the openSUSE projects by accelerating the Membership process. I'm proud of what we achieved but I also think that we are far from done. I'm especially concerned about the topic of the Foundation because I don't see too many people invested yet. We need to make sure that the Foundation is set up so that all the people who are willing AND able to carry it into the future are engaged from the beginning and understand that the openSUSE Foundation is theirs to run and to enjoy. Other than that I want to make sure that we continue the path we are on and act as a council of democratic elected representatives that don't dictate but facilitate because I think this is one of the greatest achievements of the openSUSE Project. Leadership without powerplay. And of course, you know me, I also want to continue to make sure that the openSUSE Board work produces tangible results :) So please accept my candidacy and vote for me and I promise I will continue to push this project forward. All, I'm very happy to see the excellent set of announced candidates for the board this early in the process. It won't be easy deciding who to vote for! (I gather Sebas is with openSLX). Can the wiki be updated with that info for each candidate? Specifically I believe Henne is Novell, but I don't know for sure. Also, I would like to see incumbents even more clearly identified. I see Henne is identified as a board member, but I'm used to (I) following the name of incumbents in US elections. Maybe (Incumbent) would be better for an international election like this. The whole style of the interview is very businesslike, barely anything definite, careful not to trip on any legal wires, especially the legal disclaimer at the end =) That the CEO is awnsering to community question makes quite a bold statement in my eyes, they are dedicated to the thing and that's is a comforting thought. Also it looks to me that they consider SUSE/openSUSE as a beach head for a future business model, so they are honestly interested in this community thing. Hello friends! A feature that I really miss in openSUSE is something like WUBI. Maybe you know this tool, what let you install Ubuntu on a Windows-partition. I think for beginners, who don't want to create a Linux-partition is this a easy and great way to have a nice welcome-unit in Linux. openSUSE will be a distro for beginners and advanced users, right? So this feature is a real nice present for beginners and people who just want test openSUSE. I know, it won't be easy to realize this idea, and I think it won't be a fast way to create the tool. but it will be a nice goal for openSUSE 12. I think that the scheme we use today is the best, but some people want to change it and maybe there are some very important points that shows that a change is the best way. [opensuse-project] openFATE screening next monday

Hi, we will do an openFATE screening day next monday. What does this mean? With the renewed openFATE feature tracking system[1] we have the possibility to involve the community in all steps of feature evaluation and implementation. Everyone can take responsibility for features now and track their state in openFATE. We already have some subprojects[2] using openfate such as the openSUSE distribution, OBS, SUSE Studio, Infrastructure ... On monday we will focus on screening the 11.4 features, getting used to the process[3] and report problems with the feature tracking tool. And from here on, by "LTS", I (and Wolfgang) mean "longer than 18 months" ;) There are basically two options on how to achieve that, from a technical perspective: 1) an LTS based on openSUSE 2) a rebranded SLES With "openSUSE LTS", the idea is, as Wolfgang already explained in his blog post, to pick up an openSUSE release when Novell (and the community) stops supporting it, when it goes EOL, which is after 18 months as of now. The effort can be a bit daunting, as it means keeping track of security vulnerabilities, backport fixes for those, or possibly upgrade to a newer version when backporting is too much work (e.g. Firefox). That's pretty much what is being done by the SUSE Security team and us (the community) during the lifetime of a release. But for longer and, hence, it is also more work (the older the packages, the more work it is to backport). The infrastructure provided on build.opensuse.org would certainly come in very handy. Especially when it'll have patch support :) "openSLES" is a totally different beast, as it means using the source packages of a SLES release and rebrand them. The obvious advantage is that it would most presumably be less work, as the hard work will already have been done by the Security team and the staff at Novell that does the SLES maintenance. But it would also be a rogue project: Novell cannot legally prevent anyone from doing just that as, albeit you do need a subscription to have access to them, the updates are also available as source packages. Nevertheless, it is not something Novell would like to see happening as they (or at least a few people I've talked to about it) believe it could be hurting their SLES business. While I don't personally share that opinion, and before 100 people comment negatively on this, it is a *fact* that no one can give any assurance or hard proof that it will not hurt the SLES business. Yes, we all know about CentOS, and a few know a few things about CentOS and Redhat I won't be citing in public (but let's say that some people who might or might not be working for Redhat have or haven't said that they believe that CentOS is effectively helping them spreading RHEL, but only off the record. or not.). But there are no hard facts or numbers to give any proof or guarantee that it would be the same with an "openSLES". And, personally, the last thing I'd want is people from Novell/SUSE losing their job because of that. Furthermore, Novell would clearly not be supportive of such a move, and it's not sure whether we would be able to use resources such as build.o.o for it. Long story short, I personally believe that the only viable option is "openSUSE LTS", but it does bring some technical challenges which require a certain number of committed contributors working on the maintenance. I really concur with Wolfgang's idea/proposal to start off with a server-oriented subset/core of openSUSE and try to keep that maintained for half a year or more, and learn from that experience to see whether we can realistically take on doing that for a longer period of time. [opensuse-project] Project "evergreen" (aka LTS)

Hi, there was a lot of discussion on that list about the proposal for an LTS effort or openSLE. There are pros and cons for both and those were stated in many mails now. So please let me sum up once again ;-) I mentioned somewhere in the beginning that there was so much talk and no action and I didn't want to repeat that. I'm going to start now with the following including the risk of failure: A community (we'll see) supported longer lifetime openSUSE 11.1. No, I don't think it needs an extra name as it still is 11.1. But I think I like "Evergreen" for now where that means that the "Project Evergreen" is responsible for the maintenance of that thing. Also note that I'm not against an openSLE approach and in case it happens at some point we'll see what happens with this one. I already mentioned that in the end I would be in favour to it and I also invite people to discuss that further including myself. But for now I want something to happen and I rather would like to fail instead of talking about something to death. I've already thought about technical details and how to utilize the OBS @ build.opensuse.org. There are some issues and we probably can only start with some limitations. What I really want to get now is a feeling if (and how many) people are willing to help. So everyone who is interested in helping (does not matter how) is invited to subscribe to http://lists.rosenauer.org/mailman/listinfo/evergreen (as I don't know if it really takes off and naming and stuff and it was much easier for me I set this up on my own listserver.
