[opensuse-project] Time for a change?! Talking on release numbers
Hi Folks! with the discussion of the version number of openSUSE 11.4 (12.0) I think we need a thread to talk about it in general. I think that the scheme we use today is the best, but some people want to change it and maybe there are some very important points that shows that a change is the best way. I hope we can use this thread to talk on the release number scheme and don't start some other discussions in other threads. hope we can find a way to use kind regards kdl -- Kim Leyendecker (kimleyendecker@hotmail.de) Kernel 2.4.37.10-kdl Maintainer Powered by openSUSE 11.2 "Emerald" GNOME This mail was composed under Linux -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Kim, Were you part of the large thread about numbering/naming conventions over the summer? If not you may want to read this thread: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-project/2010-07/msg00044.html Note the thread navigation bar on the left seems to have a few hundred messages in it. the problem is IMHO simple. A name is used to communicate with others (=not openSUSE users), and for most people the number after the period is a minor number. so 11.1, 11.2, 11.3 are vall the same version, only with some bugfixes. worst, many think X.0 is a beta version, unstable. there is no such problem with most other numbering shemes. I like the year:month system, but will be perfectly fine with a simple numbering like 12, 13... letting X.yyy for rolling releases (tumbelweed?) if ever they where necessary jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://pizzanetti.fr -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Tumbleweed doesn't need no stinking release numbers, it just moves along, constantly updating :) thanks, greg k-h p.s. tumbleweed is working right now for those who wish to try it out on an 11.3 based system... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

I would love to try it out! Where's the web page / repo list? Yes, to try out Tumbleweed, just add: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:/Tumbleweed/standard/ as a repo to your openSUSE 11.3 system, and then run: zypper dup to update to the latest versions of the kernel, samba, apache, and a variety of other packages. Note, please be careful, things might break in the future as we work out some of the kinks in the system (like how to properly update versions of python and perl and some system libraries), but you should always be able to just remove the repo and update back to a "clean" 11.3 system if things go wrong, but I can't guarantee anything at this point in time. And if there are any packages that you would like to see updated that aren't, please let me know and I will work on it. thanks, greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

The only packages I'm really looking to get updated in "generic" openSUSE (11.4 and beyond) are the PostgreSQL database packages. 9.0 was released a couple months ago and the last time I looked, PostgreSQL 9.0.1 was the stable release. I found 9.0 in one of the database repos, but I'd really like to see 9.0.1 make it into 11.4 if at all possible. -- http://twitter.com/znmeb http://borasky-research.net "A mathematician is a device for turning coffee into theorems." -- Paul Erdős -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Is 9.0.1 in openSUSE:Factory at the moment? I only see 8.4.4 right now. Go poke the postgresql packages about this issue, I can't update Tumbleweed before the packages are in Factory at the very least. sorry, greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

9.0.0 is in http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Application:/Geo:/Postgres84PostGI.... 9.0.1 isn't anywhere as far as I know, but there should be no difference between the build process in OBS between the two. I installed 9.0.0 from that repo a couple minutes ago but haven't done any testing yet. I've got to write some Perl code to test it out, so it may be a couple of days. -- http://twitter.com/znmeb http://borasky-research.net "A mathematician is a device for turning coffee into theorems." -- Paul Erdős -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Again, the packages need to be in Factory before they can go into Tumbleweed. Please work with the developers to get them included there, as there is nothing I can do with getting them into Tumbleweed before that happens. thanks, greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org
