[opensuse-ppc] PPC inirtrd and linux32.gz files?
I'm preparing to install v10.3 on my old world Wallstreet. However, I have burned both the Network install CD and the DVD, and I cannot find the initrd and linux32.gz files that I need to copy to the MacOS drive so that I can have BootX start the installation. Are these files no longer provided on the installation media? If not, where do I get these files? I looked at the install notes for the old world machines and there was no mention of the lack of these files or of a location to download them. Ok, I tried running that script and got a bunch of errors. It doesn't explain anything about how to use it. Do I run it on my powerbook under v10.2? Can I run it on another rmachine? Is there just a link where I can get the files that I need? Once I have them, I just need to copy them to the MacOS drive. I've used it on a PentiumM Notebook, so it shouldn't be a problem to run it on every machine. You have to download the inst32 file, copy it into a directory, copy the script there, too. Now run it using ./extract_inst32.sh inst32 linux32 initrd32.gz und you should fine the needed Kernel and initrd file when the script has finished. -- Machs gut | http://www.iivs.de/schwinde/buerger/tremmel/ | http://packman.links2linux.de/ Manfred | http://www.knightsoft-net.de --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+help@opensuse.org

Ok, I got the script to work using the inst32 file from the install DVD. However, the system hangs up and refuses to boot. It stops at the first screen that says: Welcome to Linux, kernel 2.6.22.5-31-default linked at : 0xc0000000 frame buffer at : 0x82800800 (phys), 0x82800800 (log) klimit : 0xc04f1000 boot_into at : 0x00501000 MSR : 0x00000042 PVR : 0x00080202 HID0 : 0x0291c0a4 ICTC : 0x00000000 Total space used by parameters & ramdisk: 0x004c3000 Preparing boot params... Preparing BAT... id mach(): done MMU:enter MMU:hw init hash:enter hash:find piece hash:patch hash:done MMU:mapin MMU:setio MMU:exit Then it hangs for about 3 minutes and then reboots the machine. Do I need to download a specific inst32 file? If so, what is the link? There is no link for this on that bug reporting page. Would there be any way to just make an install CD targeted toward the old world machines? I would do it if I knew how. No entry about SCSI? When booting out of MacOS, I had sometimes problems when enabling DMA. No Problems when starting Linux at Boot-time.

There's only one ins32 AFAIK.

No, I don't think so. -- Machs gut | http://www.iivs.de/schwinde/buerger/tremmel/ | http://packman.links2linux.de/ Manfred | http://www.knightsoft-net.de --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+help@opensuse.org

No entry about SCSI? When booting out of MacOS, I had sometimes problems when enabling DMA. No Problems when starting Linux at Boot-time.
No, the system doesn't even really boot. That first set of messages I copied is from before the tux icon and the kernel messages start. As for SCSI, I tried adding "noscsi" to the BootX command line with v10.2, but it didn't work. On my machine, the kernel will sometimes panic when trying to initialize the MESH controller. Since I don't use any external devices on this unit, it doesn't need to be on. How is your Wallstreet configured?

What I found interesting is that the v10.2 files are initrd and linux32.gz, but the v10.3 files are initrd.gz and linux32. Don't think that it makes a difference. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+help@opensuse.org

Nothing special, 256 MByte RAM, a bigger HD (30 GByte, but I've also installed on a 4 GByte HD). I've increased Ramdisc sice in BootX at installation tim to 12 MByte (12288) and used "video=atyfb:vmode:14,cmode:32" as kernel parameter and enabled "Force video settings". -- Machs gut | http://www.iivs.de/schwinde/buerger/tremmel/ | http://packman.links2linux.de/ Manfred | http://www.knightsoft-net.de --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+help@opensuse.org

Update: I finally got it to boot. I had to set the initial ramdisk size to 16384, and it worked. No idea why that is. I had tried setting it to 12288 like you had suggested, but that didn't work. 16MB did. It's not starting the network install. Hopefully it will install ok. Well, that didn't last long. I have no idea what the issue was with the initrd and linux32 files, but they are working just fine now with the 8192k RAM disk. However, something that was supposed to be fixed evidently isn't. The backlight goes out and doesn't come back on. Olaf had a bug fix for that in the v2.6.22 series(which is what v10.3 uses), but it seems that the stock kernel doesn't have it or something because it still doesn't turn the backlight on. Also, I managed to hose my 10.2 install during the update somehow(when it rebooted, it said that the drive was read-only and died. Couldn't even log in as root.). I'm going to try using noapm and/or apm=off and see if that helps until I can get it up and running and get the kernel updated.... sigh --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+help@opensuse.org
