For those of you who've not come across Debian before, we're a world-wide voluntary organisation (read, chaotic jumble of mailing lists) that puts together a Linux distribution (and soon a HURD distribution) and gives it away. Debian doesn't pay people to do this, and doesn't sell what it produces, and in most legal senses doesn't really exist (i.e. the machines in the mirror network mostly belong to people like me, rather than to Debian, and the bandwidth is donated rather than paid for). This probably gives a pretty good feel for what Debian is all about: http://www.uk.debian.org/social_contract which you will notice leads into the The Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG), which is where the Open Source Definition came from. My internet machine, that hosts the Debian UK mirror, may be of use to OSIE, since it has about 30GB of spare disk, and a 20Mbit/s connection at a well connected ISP. This machine could act as either a primary host or mirror site for the web site, and could do DNS secondarying etc. as well. Something I'd be interested in working on (although perhaps a SuSE list is not the right place to spend too much time discussing this ;-) would be producing Debian CD images, tuned to the needs of educational users. Debian has accumulated some funds in the UK, and have been looking for a worthwhile cause to spend them on (we never really need to pay for anything that actually makes Debian work, so don't have much use for money), so we could probably afford to have a few thousand CDs pressed, and send them out to schools that are interested. Hi Mark: The only error message I can see is this one and there is no msql.so in the directory talked about. I assume it should be mysql.so anyway? Anyone managed to get Moodle to work with SuSE? I keep getting an error relating to php.ini which I change, to no avail.On a related note, where is mysql-php on SuSE as this is essential for php working on other distros. Paul

OpenOffice works with the Blackdown distro (in fact, that's the one they recommend); just that for 1.1beta they dropped support for 1.4.1 as an accessibility function was missing. You need to have 1.4.1-01 or later. This can be downloaded from any Blackdown mirror site. Server Hardware recommendations wanted (UK)

Hi All I want to put together a small server to run SuSE Linux which will form a central point between a small Solaris network and a small Windows 2000 network used for Cisco router courses (Totals around 20 machines initially). The machine would be the gateway to internet services and email (and anything else I can think of). I'd like to experiment with a raid based system possibly dual CPU (Not strictly necessary for a small network but I want to play with these things myself and also have plenty of room for expansion should the nix side of things take off). Any recommendations gratefully received. W2000 clients

Hi We have a network of over 200 windows clients (95 & 98) which login using Samba to a Linux server based on Suse 8.1. We may need to add W2000 clients but we can't seem to get the same login structure working. Are there any issues using W2000 clients with a Samba server. NB we do not use encrypted passwords and they have been disabled on all the different clients. Dave Williams

Sorry I just thought I should have mentioned the JRE is about 22MB! I've also found linux install instructions for the self extracting binary and rpm versions (again on the sun site). where does it it install it too? Im doing it so i have the full functionality of OO.o1.1beta2. But when i do the install it say there there is no java enviroment installed. When i do the rpm thing again it says its already installed. rmps over a network

Im using Nymph thin client. I need to install java on to the servers and the only way i have of doing this is either ssh or vnc. I have the rpm of java but have no idea how to make it work only using the command line. I tried ./(filename) and got permission denied error. Although im root when i do this it shouldnt matter should it? Is there a command or switch im missing. Im sure its someththing very simple but im new to this. Ive only been us linux about 3 weeks. GPL does not include restrictions on sale - that would be a restriction on your freedom. The only requirement would be making available the source in the same way and for no greater cost. RM charges

Hi Some one mentioned recently how much RM charge for broadband etc, and for filtering updates, censonet do this for around £100 per year. http://www.intrago.co.uk just thought I would ask as the information could be useful.to local schools and me if trying to highligt the benefits of alternative solutions, in this case MS for servers and RM for everything else. I am sure hardware can be bought more cheaply, and contracts are cheaper, saving money using open /. star office is another advantage. along with other issues such as broadband and filtering. thanks paul

iptables - the solution

I recently asked about a problem I had with iptables. I have now fixed it myself (- always the best and most satisfying solution). The problem turned out to be that I really needed to flush and delete everything (including some garbage) that I had manged to get entered by several false attempts. The fact that iptables -L gave nothing made me assume that nothing was entered. Using iptables --flush iptables --table nat --flush iptables --delete-chain iptables --table nat --delete-chain then iptables --table nat --append POSTROUTING --out-interface eth1 -j MASQUERADE iptables --append FORWARD --in-interface eth0 -j ACCEPT and writing 1 to /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward did the trick. Then add the linux box as a gateway - and hey presto IP access to the outside the firewall. Now I suppose I had better learn how to tighten up the security. Now if any one could solve another problem (and I won't mind getting helped rather than doing it myself).... KMail Dying

Hi all I keep having a problem with KMail on SuSE 8.0. The app keeps intermittently stopping receiving emails. I can work in it read mails, send basically work as normal but it won't receive emails. If I close the program down and go to Sysmte Guard it says the process is still running. If I kill it and restart KMail it all works normally. This normally happens maybe once a day but it's done it 4 times already this morning. Any ideas, I wouldn't know where to begin. Cheers Matt

Assuming you mean KDE under Nymph thin client, I think it is possible to create specific settings for an individual student - bigger icons would not be enough; we'd also want a lower resolution, if possible. Ident for Windwows

With a view to authenticating use of our Linux proxy I have been looking on the web for an Ident server for our PC stations. I thought it would be easy, but... there are lots of them - and most seem to allow you to set any ID you like. Some are are only 3.xx compatible or not NT compatible. squid authentication

I have decided that I need squid to authenticate before users can use it. I have read page 435 in then manual (suse 8.2) and it refers to authenticate_program/usr/sbin/pam_auth but that doesn't appear to exist in squid.conf it suggests using acl password proxy_auth REQUIRED (now there is a proxu_auth section in squid conf - is that the option I require?) However using this line gives an error as it appears not to recognise it as "no authenication schemes are fully configured" can anyone point me in the right direction - or tell me exactly what to uncomment or add in squid.conf Many thanks. -- Alan Davies Head of Computing Birkenhead School

Postgresql upgrade

Hi, Not really a schools question, but this is my only SuSE list. I am running SuSE 8.0 which has Postgresql 7.2 installed. I hunted through yast and the SuSE site and could find no way to upgrade postgresql. I went to http://www.postgresql.org/ and all the rpms were redhat (rh7, rg8, rh9 etc). No mention of non-redhat distrubutions, didn't know which one to pickj for SuSE. I want an rpm installation, as last time I did a tar.gz installation on top of an rpm one things went a bit wrong. Please help Tim Pizey

Is that Apache or Apache2? I tried to get PHP to work with the latter and couldn't find a module for it nor any help on the internet so abandoned it and went back to Apache 1.3. We use a (Windows/Novell) product to control printing - however the usage of it is near non-existent. Staff want the students to be able to print, even if they run out through misuse, and charging caused unacceptable admin overhead. Does anyone here limit the number of pages a pupil can print? Does anyone for example give each user x number of prints per year and then charge for any excess? If so, what are the pros and cons I'd be grateful to hear other peoples views and opinions on this. We spent about 2k on printing last year... Daniel

StarOffice 6.1 beta is mirroring the developments of the OOo beta program. Star Office 6.0 is 99% the same as OO.org 1.0. It has some proprietary additions such as a Wordperfect filter, clop art and templates. The way it works is that OO.org is developed by the OO.org community of which Sun plays a major role - they provide the hosting for the OO.org web site and programmers to work on OO.org development. Other volunteers work on different projects eg marketing, CD-ROM distribution, quality assurance etc. OO.org has regular releases, there has been 1.01, 1.02, and 1.03 is the current stable release. 1.1 is now in beta2 and has more substantial changes such as PDF publication, faster operation etc. Its very likely that when 1.1 is considered stable Sun will use it as the basis for Star Office 6.1 which will again have differences in respect to utilities and say clip art but fundamentally the same code.

Linux routing

I have a LINUX box and several windows servers, all with two network cards, one connected to our internal network and one connected to the real internet (via an ADSL switching port). We do not have any masquerading /NAT enabled - nor ip forwardinng, nor socks proxies running. I changed the /etc/sysconfig/sysctl line with IP-FORWARD to state "yes" and resaved it. (Actually I think there is a misprint in the descriptions as it refers to this as ipv6 which should be the descriptor for the following parameter) I did echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward and checked by cat'ing' the same file that it had written 1. I changed the default gateway on a PC on my internal network from nothing to my linux box, and I could NOT ping anything on the external side. I restarted the LINUX box and then found I could ping the external address of my Windows servers but not the external address of anything else - which suggests to me that it is now forwarding the packets but the replies are coming back through the internal side of the window boxes rather than through the Linux box. Question 1: Why did I need to restart the LINUX box. The documentation states that I could either restart OR echo 1 to the proc/sys file. I now did iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth1 -j SNAT --to-source 217.204.233.8 which is an unused address in real internet space. Eth1 is the external ethernet card with ip address 217.204.233.9 iptables -L fails to list anything but empty descriptors after issuing this command - when I rather expected it to show what I had entered. Question 2: Why does iptables not list this rule and Question 3: Why can I still not get echo replies from external ip addresses (except our servers). I suspect I am overlooking the obvious - and of course I lay open my ignorance in these matters for you to chuckle about as a reward for pointing me in the right direction (probably retirement!). -- Alan Davies Head of Computing Birkenhead School

Really up to the person at the wheel - OpenOffice just used build numbers until they decided it was a release candidate, Mozilla used the 0.xx system until they had the functionality they originally aimed to have. Our (wonderful) helpdesk (http://helpdesk.centralmanclc.com) is using version numbering similar to Mozilla: v1.0 will be the first full release - by this we would mean it has everything fully (as far as we can tell) functional that we initially intended it would have. Any successive versions will have either additional functionality or (highly unlikely, of course ;-) ) bug fixes.* Major functionality additions add a .1 to the release, minor additions and bug fixes add a 0.01. The helpdesk has been in "live" use since 0.4 (about a month ago, now 0.7) without any significant problems from either a user or data loss perspective. * Minor caveat: so much input from people from beyond the sponsoring organisation that v1.0 will now have considerably more functionality than originally intended... Hi folks, I've googled this and pulled nothing. So, I'm writing my first 'application' in PHP. The only tenuous link to keep this 'on topic' is that I'm writing it on SuSE 8.2/Apache/MySQL/PHP. Could someone point me to what state my app should be in to constitute 'Alpha', then 'Beta', then 'version 1'. And equally, how do I 'number' it accurately to enable others to know where it's at on it's road to version 1? And as for 'release candidates'... Is there a universal system at work? It is configurable to pre-fetch, if you so wish but does not have to. Usually used to keep a copy of recently visited sites (by local network users) on the ISA box itself. Hi all: I don't know if anyone else reads (has time to) SecEd (The Voice for Secondary Education) but there is a wonderful (sic) new product from Microsoft called "The Internet Accelerator for Schools". It doesn't say how much it costs but I suspect it will be a packet as with most of their "educational" software. Apparently it works by caching web sites locally-ooh, ahh I hear you say collectively. Is there something in the Open Source world that could match this wonderful innovation.... Paul
