[Bug 330235] New: Double Xen entries exist in the boot loader
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=330235 Summary: Double Xen entries exist in the boot loader Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Xen AssignedTo: cgriffin@novell.com ReportedBy: jharmon@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- I installed the shipping version of openSUSE 10.3 (32 bit version). I then wanted to look at Xen and so I went into the software installer and installed the Xen pattern. After installing the Xen pattern I rebooted and saw that there are two Xen entries. The appear to have the same boot information, but the first one had all sorts of failures during the initial boot. The second entry appears to be the valid one. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

How exactly are you install xen?
I did a post install by just selecting the Xen pattern.
Are you choosing the kernel-xen*?
Do you mean in the grub menu or during the software selection? If you mean in the grub menu then I will have to have Jack look into that for me because my current onsite location doesn't let me vpn to Novell. I am choosing the second Xen grub option. IIRC, all of the settings were the same between the two options. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

From what I can tell, the menu is created correctly. No problem there, however either you install both kernel-xen and kernel-xenpae by accident or the pattern is too inclusive. This is why I'm interested in more details about how you installed it. I need specifics.

I went into the software management module and choose the xen pattern.
I am sorry to say (since it seems logical to do as you did) that this is not a supported method for setting up your SLES machine host as a VM host. Please see http://www.novell.com/documentation/vmserver/virtualization_basics/index.htm... and click on "installing the host software" to view our two supported methods. A little history for those who want to know: In the past Yast has not put either kernel into the Xen pattern install and then during an initial install they detect which of the 2 xen kernels (for 32 bit) is appropriate to install based on which base kernel is being installed. It now appears as though they have added both. There was no kernel in the pattern because patterns do not have the smarts in them to know which one to install. Adding both at least makes it so that you can run with one of them. Other options exist but are just as confusing as the current way it works if not more so (IMO). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Stephen is right. The bootloader entries were created properly. Therefore, I am changing this bug to be a "Patterns" issue. The Xen pattern should not contain both kernels.
That's fine. The issue was that it was closed as invalid and we create a boot entry that doesn't work. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The patterns do not list a kernel at all. Provide the full yast logs and most importantly: tell if this is gtk or qt package manager.
Sorry for the delay, I was onsite at a customers all last week. I am using gtk and I'll attach the logs shortly. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

However, the problem of XEN not being able to install completely via a pattern install still exists.
Is there already another bug opened for the other issue or does one need to be opened. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It could be done either way, I guess. You decide. :) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
