During an earlier upgrade from 10.3 to 11.0, I *was* very careful to select the correct disk/partition but that did not eventually work because of the above problem and I had to wipe the 10.3 install and install 11.0 on my disk. This appears to be an issue with enumerating sata/ide disks first and then scsi disks, versus the other way around. It seems that there is missing information about bios_id -> the order number from BIOS. The result is that you have wrong device map. From logs (y2log-6): There are 5 disk: /dev/sda - "bios_id":"0x80", /dev/sdb - "bios_id":"0x81", /dev/sdc - without biod_id, /dev/sdd - "bios_id":"0x82", /dev/sde - without biod_id,

...

From hwinfo: (there were changes :() there are 3 devices with BIOS id

/dev/sdf - 0x81 /dev/sde - 0x80 /dev/sdc - 0x82 Steffen I don't know how hwinfo provides "bios_id" for yast2-storage but /dev/sdc and /dev/sde are without bios_id. I had to rescue system and manually fix device.map and menu.lst to fix things. Surely I am not the only person with this problem. Having to fix grub after every kernel update, or new release of openSuSE is going to be a major problem, especially given this problem did not exist with 10.3 and earlier releases. But the basic problem is that your BIOS provides only id for 3 devices. Next devices are only map by heuristic not exactly. I am not able to solve the order of your disk correctly (in device.map) if ids are missing. It's not possible. I can used only heuristic. I am sorry. How to solve it? You can unplug 2 disks -> I am not sure if you want it. You can try to update BIOS -> It can help but probably not. I am running a server machine (Tyan Thunder k8we / S2895) motherboard. unplugging drives is *not* a reasonable solution. I am using the latest BIOS from Tyan. The only potential workaround is to manually change the disk order. This does *not* help when doing a kernel update as every such update has broken grub for me! The fact still remains that openSUSE is internally registering/storing disk order in an INCONSISTENT way! I do not think it matters what ordering is used. It is IMHO a fatal bug for a system to be inconsistent and that alone should be reason enough to fix this problem. Clearly without the bios disk data, two different components of the system are assisgning a disk ordering. The problem is two different disk orderings are being assigned. The system should adapt whatever disk ordering is first assigned for the rest of it's components. I am sure this is part of what I am seeing as issues. I started with booting from various HD on the system. It had orignally just Reiser FS filesystems. I would fail randonly. Different bug. But Now because of this bug I have issues trying to boot into my SCSI HD. My System an HP does not allow me to boot directly to the SCSI in the BISO. So I have to boot from the IDE/EIDE and then go to the SCSI. I updated/upgraded this machine to 11.0 and now I can not seem to come up with something to boot to the SCSI. I now have EXT3 as partition type on the IDE drive and the SCSI drives are Reiser. The install CD or DVD will not see the Reiser Partitions.
