So we've decided to use whatever-its-called as the default 12.1 wallpaper, but the decision was far from unanimous. Hi all, The awesome brochure sources have finally been recovered. You can find them here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/29347181/openSUSE%20brochure_v4.eps There is a number of changes we need to do, all summarized in the document with the updated text: * Text needs review * Need to turn the Brochure in a 3-panel trifold on A4 * Remove 'links' pane on front * Replace front text with shorter text (see below) * Re-arrange back to fit A4 and use improved text (see below) * Get rid of the SUSE and Novell logos, this is an openSUSE Brochure * We need to make this Creative Commons, except for the logo's. * The openSUSE Logo on the front page is some self made logo with strange color in the text, needs to be fixed. * There is only one small Geeko on the whole brochure. We need more :D * A bit less SUSE Studio, a bit more other openSUSE projects. Nice to have: * We can use the upcoming 12.1 artwork on the front * turn it into a SVG so it can be translated more easily! See the above todo and text here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/29347181/openSUSE%20brochure_v4.odt Anyone who is willing or able - let us know what changes you can make, make them, get the result to me and I'll put the updated version back on the dropbox. As soon as we have a decent version we can start translating & printing. A large change I made which I need feedback on is that I removed the app installer text to be replaced with openQA. Ladies and Gentlemen, I am one of the authors of a openSUSE wiki (dewiki) and follow the curious creation of the design for our openSUSE 12.1. I'm just curious to what design should have the counter for 12.1 then hopefully soon we can build into our wiki. We do get a counter, does not it? If only it would be nice if we include this as soon as possible to the corresponding pages (wiki, blogs, forums) could. Here's another "draft" to chew on. This one I tried to focus on what I would want to put up, that would entice other people to check out openSUSE. 2nd draft on my poster for the flip side of the open source calendar. This draft includes elements of the 12.1 theme, as well as evoking the choice and flexibility of openSUSE. I've always wanted to make reference to the Chameleon as a concept not just a logo, finally got that chance here. Hi Marcus, Thanks for this.. I'm not sure I like the 'grey' it fades to? can we get something in green, but with that 'brightness'? I totally understand about the whole brightness thing - finding that sweet spot can be quite hard (some of my favourite drafts were universally condemned as way too bright) I'm still going to have a go myself when I get a second (and thanks to your svg it'll be a ton easier! THANK YOU), but the day job is extending into an evening job tonight..grr database upgrades.. I agree, and feedback I've seen on irc seems to suggest jdd and I are not alone. Hello, The new artwork is very nice, but it's much lighter than the last one on 11.4. So when one have the two of them on the same computer, it's very difficult to adjust the light to fit. Hello, The artwork team need to have a clue of what is the desired direction we have to take about color in 12.1. The delay is extremely small. [opensuse-artwork] 12.1 concept status update

Hi all. We had a short irc meeting (as Robert announced earlier) and agreed that we want to stick with the Verde concept, which is Azul in green. I suggested some slight modifications: http://minus.com/mbcy5pFohE as this would leave enough place for the KDE desktop folder. The openSUSE logo is also more prominent in the above version. Richards designs will be packages within the additional wallpaper rpm by Javier, so hopefully everyone will be satisfied. Next step is to update the SVGs and create an KDM theme. I will try to take care of that. Coolo is going to take a look at the bootsplash theme. Till now, thanks all contributors for the great work. Hi Again Marcus, Probably best you discuss this on opensuse-gnome (cc'd) There was discussion at the GNOME 3 session at oSC which decided that it was highly likely we will be using the default theme in 12.1, but perhaps with Sonar-GTK3 packaged as an option Since then, half-left, the person behind the Sonar-GTK3 port has got involved and is actively working to get Sonar working satisfactorily on GNOME 3.2. At this stage, my opinion would be that it is possible, though unlikely, that Sonar-GTK3 will be ready enough to be considered to be the default for 12.1. My creation of 'sonar-friendly' versions of my wallpapers was just my small effort to help half-left along. AFAIK no "official" decision has been made. Hi all. here are some general notes on ML polls. Please use the original thread to vote. Only give one +1. Votes with more than one +1 will note be counted. Comment in a separate thread (e.g. if the vote thread is named openSUSE 12.1 wallpaper poll, use a comment thread openSUSE 12.1 wallpaper comments for discussion). Keep the thread as it is (do not snip out or modify +1s by others). Add a blank line after your +1. Hi folks, my wife helped me with the artistic part of my inkscape work for our entry in the openSUSE-12.1 Artwork competition: http://www.zq1.de/~bernhard/linux/opensuse/12.1/opensuse-12.1-draft9.svg.png (CC-SA licensed) The directory also contains earlier versions and svg source. I used the colors from http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Artwork_guidelines Butter and Lemon colors for the background gradient and Sky color for the Bezier curves with an added white band - all slightly transparent to better merge into the whole. Maybe the background could still be improved... But this is why I like it: 1. The absence of solid and sharp shapes - This is important to me because the human brain will try to make the users focus on sharp and solid shapes to identify and process them. It's because of this that people get tired after some time from watching to a wallpaper. So in a way you've kept it to the minimum which eventually is good and won't tire so much the users. 2. No text - Text shouldn't be allowed in wallpapers or splashscreens, in fact it's for example one of the basic rules on Fedora Design Team. This brings technical problems on scalling images and other tiny aspects. 3. Green - Despite green provides some technical dificulties (as Will mentioned earlier, unless the monitors are properly calibrated it might appear in different tones in different monitors/chipsets), it's one of the most widely accepted colors by people (cognitive thingie). Furthermore, green is one of the few colors which check without issues in most cultures, thus removing some cultural barriers that other colors have, which is awesome for us since we are a universal distribution. This to say, it's the one which would suit my needs, but like I said before, while it's nice for a wallpaper, I'm not really sure if it would fit well for a splash image. [opensuse-artwork] Big Picture Idea

Hi friends It has come to our attention in recent times that we are all trying to work out the upcoming openSUSE release artwork. Generally the process occurs the same way, we see that there are just a few weeks ahead and we need to get the artwork done for the release. We dig around, make proposals, discuss changes and, more often than not, we want to make desing decisions that are simply to big that we cannot make them for the upcoming release. Therefore, we move these bigger design ideas for a later time and the process repeats itself once the next release is close. It would be a great thing if we could work out a bigger plan now, or after release, so that we become more united as a team and make coherent and correlated design decisions for openSUSE. We have the enthusiasm and people needed to have openSUSE be the most beautiful linux distro out there. So that is my question. Are we willing to correlate our efforts and design at a meeting, either now or after the release of 12.1? If so, when is a good time to meet (IRC, or G+ Hangout)? Hi, While the discussion about the wallpaper artwork is important: do we have someone here capable of creating animations? Right now our "animations" are bound to simple progress bars, even though we can do a lot more. They have to be limited, because you still want to boot and not play movies, but we can play e.g. MNG files that go beyond boxes. Hi guys, After the great discussions at oSC about 12.1 Art and such I got thinking - the artwork used on the T-shirts at the conference seemed popular, and has been floating around on posters and the like. It might make an interesting starting point for a 12.1 wallpaper. Do we have a copy of it anywhere? I can't find it in opensuse-artwork gitorious, am I looking in the wrong place? [opensuse-artwork] how we do distro artwork

Hi, I am not an artist and do not contribute very much to artwork (except ideas with which I annoy Robert), but I like to propose something as I think we are in a difficult situation when it comes to artwork. What I see on the artwork ML shows me that we are not working after a plan or concept. Here and there people come up with backgrounds or splashs which is great and shows a direction, but honestly I think that is not enough. Obviously there is more to design on the distro than just the wallpapers, the login page or the splash screen. There is widget theming, fonts, application spash screens, the Yast installer and probably more. We need everything two times in a branded and debranded version to get our new trademark policy going. Thats a lot of work, but can of course be simplified, the least effort version is to have 'just' a wallpaper, which is going to be used as splash and login manager background. Given the timeframe we have for 12.1 thats probably the only solution. But after 12.1 we face the problem again. And to make it a success I'd like to propose to rather discuss about a concept of design than about examples of design. IMO an example of a concept could be like this (just as an example, not as concrete proposal for the distro): ==> Old Industrial Grounds ====================== The next openSUSE Distro will be in a design in the idea of old industrial grounds. On the ground you find big rusty iron parts, most of them are broken as nobody took care for years. You find big iron girders, some are bent, with wholes and damages. Big screws lie around, holding fragments together. Rarely there is a larger part giving an impression of power and work that was done with this engines back in its times. The main colors here are dark brown and dark gray tending to black. Some surfaces are glossy as they are wet. Some plants bring a glimpse of dark green. Details show a bit of brighter rusty brown to red. <== Something like that could be a starting point of discussion where all involved people could develop their imagination of the scene. After we agreed on this little "atmospheric story", the work starts to transfer it on actual design elements: Fonts, colors, images, icons, logos etc. Again, discussion, but along a commonly agreed idea. The question would not be "Is it a nice picture?" but "Is this picture representing the old industrial ground well?" - still enough room for personal like and dislike.... Again, I am not an artist, but I work in software for long and learned that a concrete common idea really helps if you develop something in a group. And often it can be developed in a different space than the end product will be, ie. a basic idea of a software is best sketched on a whiteboard... Maybe that can help us to get to a more conceptual working style in artwork? [opensuse-artwork] poster project again

Hi all!!! I've gotten the budget together to do the awesome poster/calendar project we did last year again. You know, the one with the calendar of FOSS events on one side and the Beer poster on the other side. For this year, we're gonna do it even bigger, in the international Linux Magazine and the USA Linux Pro Magazine! So we should of course have new artwork :D Final artwork is required on the first of Oct, just 4 weeks from now. All the rest would be pretty much the same as last year. we deliver the graphics for the front side, they design the calendar on the back. Specs for pir artwork are: Size: 400 mm * 574 mm, plus 3mm additional bleed on each side, Hi-res PDF, 4-colour, CMYK. Now we can get that two ways. First, I can get the SUSE marketing people to design something for us. Either Robert, if he has time, or someone in the corporate marketing. The other option is of course all of YOU. But we're all very busy with the openSUSE conference and the openSUSE 12.1 artwork. And if we make this, it has to be REALLY GOOD. Because there is the calendar on one side, we have to have a really cool poster to make people hang up the openSUSE side! The question thus is: can we come up with something good in 3-4 weeks, or should I start asking inside SUSE? Think about it carefully: of course you all CAN come up with something cool, BUT do we have time between working on the openSUSE conf and openSUSE 12.1 and all other things like the flyer etc? If we rush it, it might not be good - and then everyone will hang up the calendar side :( Let me know your thoughts. Jos
