[opensuse-artwork] openSUSE-12.1 Artwork
Hi folks, my wife helped me with the artistic part of my inkscape work for our entry in the openSUSE-12.1 Artwork competition: http://www.zq1.de/~bernhard/linux/opensuse/12.1/opensuse-12.1-draft9.svg.png (CC-SA licensed) The directory also contains earlier versions and svg source. I used the colors from http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Artwork_guidelines Butter and Lemon colors for the background gradient and Sky color for the Bezier curves with an added white band - all slightly transparent to better merge into the whole. Maybe the background could still be improved... Maybe the background could still be improved...
Also, I personally find the design a bit too simple. Greets Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+help@opensuse.org

Just my opinion here. But the main reason why I like Marcus's samples is because it is somewhat darker. Both Bernard's and Marcus's samples are definitely very pretty, but Bernard's is way too bright for me and my eyes are sensitive to bright things. Again, just my opinion. I think that while that was an interesting idea, mathematical shapes
do not seem to represent the best or most recognizable feature of
openSUSE, namely the color green and the gecko.

I don't know about Andi, but I was not involved with artwork when that discussion happened, but I can agree with him that there are better things than output from "surf". Of course, when I used bezier-curves, gradients and ellipses in inkscape, one could understand that those were "mathematical shapes", too. Ciao Bernhard M.
I've just some questions that raise now : - First 12.1 is a revolution for us, first non novell sponsored release - Will include Gnome3 - will include kde 4.7 or 4.8 - will include kernel 3 - will include systemd etc .. Then we should ask ourself what feeling the booting artwork and the display manager should give to our users (the very ancient, the old, and the new one) If you assist to some talks given by master, an artwork has to generate a emotion. Actually what I've seen is a retaste of old artwork we already have, so what's new ? nothing We have to be really really really more inventive, even let's break all rules that struggle us actually and make something really freaky, funky, modern new for the boot splash and login manager. We can always have a -traditional- package added for those who doesn't like it. Next point : I've discuss with some people from several major desktop and it seems that the big trend actually is once the user enter his xsession, it become it's own sphere, and so let the upstream branding as default for the desktop. (xfce, gnome, lxde, enlightment want that). I know that the situation is different for kde, which in openSUSE/SuSE has a for a long time several artwork and modifications. other point : Branding, artwork etc, will not be only a question of one image, it's also all the stuff that need to be done, put in rpm, and finally pushed in factory. Don't forget, all the stuff need to be free in terms of rights, and in svg format Final point : I dream about a new artwork team, where at least 5 artists really cooperate thinking about new ideas and work as team, not just a contest about who made a nice picture. I know this is a bit unusual in that area. -- Bruno Friedmann Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch openSUSE Member & Ambassador GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 irc: tigerfoot

Mathematical surfaces have always been a unique identifier to SUSE (and could easily become again for openSUSE). I also like Piotr's concept, but it's more a light makeover of what we had in 11.2 Besides that I just wonder why things that have been agreed, cannot be trusted in this group, and this is what makes me angry a bit. I have talked to several ppl, trying to find one who helps us with the surfaces, and now I can tell him, we have decided not to stick with that concept. If this is something that you have put on a lot of effort, go ahead
and do it. My position is not that I do not want a mathematical shape
as part of the artwork for the next release. The one mockup presented
here can be an addition to what we have. I think that what we can
rescue out of this conversation is that we truly need a strong and
committed artwork team. Not only should we propose simple ideas and
nice touches here and there, but just like openSUSE, we could have a
mission, a long term achievement; artwork that not only shows and
sparks with every release, but much like in the shape of what KDE and
Gnome have done with their new iterations. Just an idea though.

I agree, the mathematical shapes denote continuity. I simply wonder
how many people will understand the idea or even appreciate the
artwork. That was all. Hopefully Marcus continues to work with the

yep. We need some sort of official sandbox with browsing capability better than git. It's not about dismissing good artwork. It's about concepts. Take a look at e.g. how Fedora does it. Wallpaper submissions should fit into that concept. One idea is e.g. to create a surface for every release, and let ppl create artwork based on that. And within these rules everyone is free to do whatever he/she wants. fwiw, I agree. And the idea of JDD having some shape and for each release and tell people to use it somehow is very good. Meanwhile, for 12.1, I like where your work is going. It's a bit too smooth for my taste - look at what piotr did with the background. Maybe, the two pieces of work fit together - the flower-like shape on the background (which also features flower-like things). In any case, something flower+mathematics is awesome, I like that stuff. But as usual - I'm not an artist and suck at judging art too :D

Besides that I would expect more constructive contributions by you. Why don't you come up with your own proposal or with a conept idea? Hi,
I think the blue version combines more for KDE. Yes! We can have this color :)
But we also need one for the other window managers.
Endless possibilities ;)

What I would like to have is: some kind of green for booting and installation and a wallpaper nice to the eyes. So we could agree on the 4th blue as wallpaper and continue to work on the boot artwork based on the barcode in green. Dear Stephan,
I personally wouldn't use a completly different design for installation/boot and desktop.
Can I know why? It's not a problem to OSX and windows.
A common design offers a consistent user experience. What I could imagine, is a e.g. gray version of the wallpaper elements for install/boot and a colored version for the desktop. Color changes from e.g. green to blue are a bit strange. Another option would be to remove most of the graphical elements from the installer (as anaconda did in the latest releases) and simplify it to e.g. just the logo on gray background. Same goes for bootsplash. Greets Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+help@opensuse.org

Hi all.
When will we stop using this GDM? I believe that I and thousands of GNOME users are not satisfied with their poor visual.
I personally like GDM a lot. It even gets better and more attractive with GNOME 3.2

No it isn't, but it looks good by default :) Besides that, we do not lack of things that needs to be customized. Greets Marcus

There is still a patch to rebase on GDM on bugzilla that no one looked into. The current GDM is still using the GNOME 'look', while in the GNOME2 series we had a 'customized' look on the login box. If anyone wants to tweak the XML, I'm sure it will be most welcomed :) NM

A question: When will we stop using this GDM? I believe that I and thousands of GNOME users are not satisfied with their poor visual.
Ok, three things: 1. GDM supports all there is to be supported and works, I don't see a good reason for changing it in GNOME, neither I would assume that the GNOME Team would allow that GDM was to be changed, specially when it even supported future required features that KDM doesn't. 2. I would not get KDM to install and it's dependencies on a GNOME install, I don't like my system tainted... only kernels should get tainted, not GNOME installs. 3. Red Hat is paying someone to redesign GDM, it might take a while, but it looks like that John McCann is going to do it. :)
(But this is subject to a new thread :) )

Wow! Wonderful! Can we get something like this for gdm?
No, sorry, GDM does not support theming like KDM, anymore (only wallpaper changes).

Why don't you at least pretend to be a nice guy in public? Language like 'tainted' referring to other desktops was crass even in the glory days of Ximian+Novell in 2004. Hi all.

JDD, yes you do - and many others as well. For the openSUSE 12.1 artwork, let's not bikeshed but let the artists come up with some great ideas. If anybody has a constructive comment, let's say it once but not fight it. I see a couple of guys doing the work and let them come up with their design. I'm sure they'll ask if they need a guidance on which one to choose. That's true, jdd contributes a lot. I think, staying with the green what ever happens is a bad idea, specially as it is a very bad colour for screen design (specially wallpaper). Robert

I don't see why a 14 years color choice feel so bad, I never had problems nor user remark about it, but it's perfectly your right to think so. And I'm not once and for all for staying green, but * as Nelson said green is a very well connoted color in nearly any country * if you want to change the change have to be first largely discussed and progressive. That's why I voted for the black screen with a green tail. and notice that anytime we discuss on this list, the result seems to change! some weeks ago, the majority was for a mathematical shape, nobody seems to want now. May be we are not a sufficient number. Anyway, as long as I understand Robert is the people in charge officially (at least since the OSC artwork meeting) and so he is to have the last work. jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://pizzanetti.fr -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+help@opensuse.org

Below are my preferences. Bearing in mind that unused art will contribute to great wallpaper collection! I think first decide if you want classic or modern. Modern, go with the QR code or the beautiful dark grey. Classic for me is the olive green or black barcode, or the Piotr's green swirl. The blue ones I think are nice but a little dull. http://www.marcusmoeller.ch/share/oS/12_1/concepts/openSUSE_azul2.jpg +1 with some ajustment (dots fade to lower left or something) http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h414/anditosan/openSUSE-Wallpaper-Dark.p... +1 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/294274/os12.1/playground/os12.1-Wallpaper-QRCode.png +1 (with different color background) http://www.sysrich.co.uk/121wallpaper/draft5.png +1 http://www.sysrich.co.uk/121wallpaper/draft3.png +1 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/473272/suse_12_1.png

IMO, it would be easier if we move some stuff from git to obs, so that you would just have to update a jpg or whatever source in a spec file. Greetings, -- Javier Llorente

If that's the way things go here, I am not willed to help out anymore. Sorry
why do you think so after only one mail? This group is small and informal, so people change. and we have few real artists in it. That said, may be we can learn from each other. May be the mathematical motive will be better at the left place on the screen? We want it, but not to be the most visible (we have to have application running on top of this screen), and moreover, the place where computer users look at first may not be the most commpon one: we are used to look at the bottom left to see the "start" icon, not on the usual focusing point on the upper right jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://www.youtube.com/user/jdddodinorg http://jdd.blip.tv/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+help@opensuse.org
