There is not exist a file named /var/log/messages (Like Slackware linux I used.) Of course it doesn't. openSUSE uses systemd, meaning that there is no syslog by default.
Actually, that was by choice because someone decided there was no need for a syslog daemon.
Wasn't that a side effect of someone deciding the default would be for SDto log as little as possible, and what it does log, it was to keep in transient storage so the log would be cleared each boot?
It was discussed quite a bit back in 2012. https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2012-09/msg00982.html It goes on well into October. In October 2012, Andreas Jaeger declared "And the stand-alone desktop is the primary target of openSUSE." https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2012-09/msg00986.html Of course, Andreas has moved on to pastures new and in our current do-ocracy, maybe I should just go and re-add syslog-ng to the default patterns. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (4.9°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - dedicated server rental in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
