What about those of us who don't use a desktop manager
If you're not using a DM then ... hey, are you using raw X11?
Just use "startx" and you have no display manager. Huh, desktop manager?
Indeed. With the same fvwm2 setup I've had for about....9 years.

fvwm2 is a window manager just like any of the others. Its a Desktop Manager as well, there being no difference between a DM and a WM other than degrees.
Sure... certainly no argument that it is a WM, but it is quite unlike Gnome or KDE. My understanding was that a DM was a graphical login screen (usually invoked at runlevel 5, rather than 3) and which then spawned whatever WM or desktop environment (e.g. KDE) the user configured. No "kids" nor "lawns". Sorry if I stepped on someone's toes.
