You might also look at DARKTABLE. That doesn't alter the image, rather it makes a parallel file of the changes that are interpreted when viewing with darktable. http://www.darktable.org/usermanual/ch01s03.html.php
darktable 1.6.0 is exactly what I was looking for.
After some experimenting I found out that darktable always makes up a new directory with the import date, thus resulting in possible double imports. :-( Could not find anything in darktable to stop that. "override today's date" (import settings) does not work in darktable 1.6.0 . So I took a look at shotwell and this seems to be more comfortable for importing.
