I speak of LibreOffice.
The version which is available from the openSUSE repositories is 4.1.6.
The latest stable version available from libreoffice.org is version 4.2.4.2. You can get the latest build of LibreOffice (v 4.2.4.2) from:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/LibreOffice:/Factory/openSUSE_13.1... (assuming openSUSE 13.1)
Having 4.1.6 in the main 13.1 repo is no surprise really. It's the LibreOffice release that was stable/current at 13.1 release.
I don't know who is causing this problem but to me it is clear that openSUSE is *WAY* behind what is available from LibreOffice.org. Nope.. you're just pulling from the "wrong" repo. :-)
When you run YaST2 you are able to view the Repositories available and add new repositories.
Under the Community Repositories there is the LibreOffice respository - and this repository gets you:
download.opensuse.org/repositories/LibreOffice:/stable/openSUSE_13.1/ .
Now, where the heck does Factory get into the picture?!
LibreOffice is automatically installed when one installs openSUSE (say 13.1).
OK, with this I expect to only get the version and any bug fixes for the version which is installed with 13.1 via the usual (?)update repo(s) for 13.1.
But when I see a Community Repository titled LibreOffice I expect that to have the latest version of LibreOffice - and I *don't* expect to learn that the bloody latest version is sitting in some other damn repository!
Well, if you look here: http://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/ you will see that LibreOffice 4.1.6 is one of the two available released versions - ie the "stable" release vs the "fresh" release. So you are getting **A** current release of LibreOffice. Should it be 4.2.4.2? Probably, but providing 4.1.6 is still technically within the confines of the latest supported release as provided by TDF. :-P
Wot a lot of...... I suspect that the first-ever release of LibreOffice is still supported - but so what?
Where does factory come into the picture? Easy. Go here: http://software.opensuse.org/131/en and search LibreOffice (like you should do when you want to find openSUSE apps right?).
Oh no, none of this "go here" and "go there" crap. I install openSUSE and LibreOffice is installed. I then hear that there is a new version available. I know that there is YaST2 where I can see that there is a Community Repository called LibreOffice - and this is the repository I acrivate with the intention of getting the latest version of LibreOffice. I know nothing about software.opensuse.org/131/en nor have I even heard of it. So how would I "go" there if I have never heard of it?
That leads you here: http://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/ Scroll down, click the "show unstable packages" link and shazam, there's the LibreOffice release you wanted :-)
"show unstable packages"...... and "shazam, there's the LibreOffice release [I] wanted". Well Captain Marvel, I do not associate shazam with anything which contains the word "unstable" in the description :-) . Unstable is, well, unstable and I want something which is stable. The LibreOffice site shows the stable version(s) available and the pre-release version(s). The repository in YaST2 has the description "...../LibreOffice:/stable/......." -- not 'unstable' or 'Factory' but the simple word "stable" - which is the word used on the LO site for version 4.2.4.2 which is the one I downloaded.
