that make me think OBS is the worst Idea ever...
A bit of history: There was no OBS and there was just rpmbuild. Everyone was able to make his own rpms and not able to share. Then one day a group of SUSE employees created OBS so people were able to share their rpm creations. It is not without problems, but it is much better then before. 8<
Problem 1: Unfortunately one does not get very helpful information about which of the various repos should be chosen.
You are right, that is one of problems. It is similar to reasons to create OBS. Everyone has to learn which repos are good and which not, instead to have some service that will allow people that know what is good to share their experience. 8<
Problem 2: No one tells me whether the repository I use is still alive, the packages in there are still maintained and whether I should change to another repository to get e newer version of the software.
It is the same as above. We don't have tool to share knowledge about repos and software. 8<
Thats why I think OBS does not work. At least the way it is set up and organised at the moment. And it is basically impossible to recommend OBS to a non-nerd in any way.
You can recommend what worked for you, so someone has chance to find information, but place where you will be able to put comment will be better. Not so nice is that it is not that easy to get such system right. One of problems is explained here http://xkcd.com/937/ :)
