Since I have a folder full of LiveCDs and have never met this problem, I wonder if its simply lack of experience with the varieties of Linux and lack of experiences with problem diagnostics. Quite possibly I've run into something LIKE this and not noticed it because I'm so use to dealing with Linux and oddities of hardware.
If you install openSUSE on a machine which already has a windows partition taking up the whole disk, the install wants to shrink that windows partition to make room for the new linux partitions(s), and to shrink a partition, it should be defragmented first, to avoid its taking a very long time, and to avoid risk of corrupting the windows partition. Yes there is a way of running linux from a file on a windows partition, but you normally don't want to do that And yes, if all you want to do is to run a live CD, then none of this is necessary.
