My only remaining question is about the flag to tell zypper to download everything first, then install after all the downloads complete. Or maybe the new flag defaults to this behavior, and not of the behavior before the flag?
I suppose it would be somewhere in /etc/zypp/zypper.conf or /etc/zypp/zypp.conf.
RTFM?

zypper dup # Install the packages If you prefer to download all packages before installing, add a -d flag to the end of the command. After the packages get downloaded, run the command again, this time without -d. === Please, the upgrade via zypper dup is new, so lets all use the wiki page to understand what is needed.
