I'm not much of a gee-whiz widget guy, but one of the plasma-desktop widgets that I do use is the "System Monitor - CPU" graph. It is excellent for giving a small concise visual representation of your CPU load so you can catch at a glance any deviation in CPPU utilization.
I find it really handy. After a day or so, you learn the cpu usage personalities of your box (idles 2-5%, normal browsing, word processing, email 5-15%, +10-20% with virtual box running as well, etc..) so if you look down and your pegged at 40% cpu usage, you know that something is misbehaving...
