Thank you all for the comments. I went out today to my local PC store and purchased a Dynex USB parallel cable to plug into the USB port on the PC and 'old style' printer port on my HP LaserJet 5L. For the R100/$10 it cost it is not a train smash if it doesn't work with this cheap workaround. Will report back if I succeed in printing, once I have the system installed.
