I have been on holiday and while I was away I turned the machine off. Today I turned it on and did the usual updates. It said I needed to reboot with a new kernel. Since then I have been unable to use the machine. 1: The keyboard changed to a different configuration 2: It tries to start sendmail despite my having uniunstalled it (I use exim) 3: X does not work; sax2 will not start; fatal error inserting nvidia.ko from /lib/modules/2.6.25.9-0.2-default/weak-updates/ 4: Attempts to build nvidia driver from the d/load gives a compilation error (implicit declaration od function global_flush_tlb How do I get a working machine back?
Sounds like the new kernel didn't get added to grub properly. Check the grub version of the kernel and the installed kernel version when you get to the login prompt. I'm willing to bet it didn't update grub and your initrd properly. Try running "you" and uninstalling the kernel update to see if that fixes it, and then try updating the kernel again.
