[opensuse] 11.0 on x86_64 stipped working
I have been on holiday and while I was away I turned the machine off. Today I turned it on and did the usual updates. It said I needed to reboot with a new kernel. Since then I have been unable to use the machine. 1: The keyboard changed to a different configuration 2: It tries to start sendmail despite my having uniunstalled it (I use exim) 3: X does not work; sax2 will not start; fatal error inserting nvidia.ko from /lib/modules/2.6.25.9-0.2-default/weak-updates/ 4: Attempts to build nvidia driver from the d/load gives a compilation error (implicit declaration od function global_flush_tlb How do I get a working machine back? ==John ff -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

How do I get a working machine back?

If you live in a humid environment, try the following: open up your computer. un plug and plug back in all your cards and memory sticks. no need to pull the cpu out of the socket. unplug and plug back again all your disk connectors / cables. try starting the system. turning a computer on after a few days off In a hot & humid environment is often troublesome. the reason is micro corrosion at the connectors; i have to reseat my connectors almost every time my computers stay off for more than a couple of weeks, especially during the wet months of the Hawaiian year. The hard drive connectors are the most troublesome. good luck, d. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
It seems that the problem I had was the Nvidia driver was broken for the new kernel, and the repository did not fix. The driver I had did not even compile. Fixed by getting a newer driver from the nvidia site. No idea why sendmail was b******d up. ==John ffitch -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Sounds like the new kernel didn't get added to grub properly. Check the grub version of the kernel and the installed kernel version when you get to the login prompt. I'm willing to bet it didn't update grub and your initrd properly. Try running "you" and uninstalling the kernel update to see if that fixes it, and then try updating the kernel again.
