Now that most of the initial hysteria over kde4 has died down, I tried it again. Most of the things I need or want are there, but I find that smplayer doesn't work. I took some videos of family yesterday, and tried running smplayer and kaffeine under kde4. The video is solid black. Audio is fine, but there's no video. To be sure i wasn't missing something, I told opensuse updater to check for updates, and there was one security and 10 optional updates. I let them be installed and tried again; no go. Still black video. I switched back to kde3 and all is fine. I notice that smplayer has very clean sound, but kaffeine is very noisy. I run the same video files back to back, and the difference in noise level is clearly audible, though kaffeine is not usually so bad as to make the audio impossible to understand. Why would this be?
