[opensuse] smplayer doesn't work under kde4
Now that most of the initial hysteria over kde4 has died down, I tried it again. Most of the things I need or want are there, but I find that smplayer doesn't work. I took some videos of family yesterday, and tried running smplayer and kaffeine under kde4. The video is solid black. Audio is fine, but there's no video. To be sure i wasn't missing something, I told opensuse updater to check for updates, and there was one security and 10 optional updates. I let them be installed and tried again; no go. Still black video. I switched back to kde3 and all is fine. I notice that smplayer has very clean sound, but kaffeine is very noisy. I run the same video files back to back, and the difference in noise level is clearly audible, though kaffeine is not usually so bad as to make the audio impossible to understand. Why would this be? Try switching the video output from xv to X11 or vice versa. Also, you may try video output gl and gl2. The setting (in smplayer) is at Options/Preferences/General/Output drivers. I haven't tried it on KDE4, but in the past on different configurations/distros this helped. Well, I just switched back to kde4 and tried the video, and before I made any changes, I tried smplayer and kaffeine again. Both are now fine. --Well, kaffeine's audio is still very noisy. There were two updates involving a dozen or so file between my tries on kde4; I wonder if that had something to do with it. I don't remember any of them having to do with kde, though. In sum, things look good now. I'll stay with kde4 for now, to see how it does. jp -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I found I could not play videos with ANY player as long as desktop effects are enabled. Disabling them allows the videos to play.
