It means, run "compiz-manager --replace" :)

Yes. I rather asked for that, didn't I? :-D The thing is, though, it doesn't really address the problem. Running compiz-manager --replace is effectively what is happening on the second call: but just to demonstrate, here's what happens when I do it explicitly: peter@linux:~> compiz-manager & [1] 887 peter@linux:~> Checking for Xgl: present. Checking for nVidia: not present. Checking for Xgl: present. Enabling Xgl with nVidia drivers... I expected that once I'd activated compiz it would work the same way all the time: instead, it sort of half works when I start up, and then only works (almost) fully when I mess with the compiz-manager command as above. I never get any Emerald windows activated, no matter what I do, and I can't seem to get the raindrops effect, either. Neither of these are of any earth-shattering importance, but I like to play and I'm puzzled about what's not going right. Should I put a call to compiz-manager --replace in /etc/profile (or the local version, whatever it's called)?
