[opensuse] While we're on about compiz ...
Does anyone know what this means? I normally have compiz installed and active, but I only get a few effects. The cube and stuff. Wobbly windows and stuff never works. If I run compiz-manager once, I get: peter@linux:~> compiz-manager Checking for Xgl: present. Checking for nVidia: not present. Checking for Xgl: present. Enabling Xgl with nVidia drivers... Enabling Xgl with fglrx ATi drivers... * Detected Session: kde /usr/bin/compiz (core) - Error: Screen 0 on display ":0.0" already has a window manager; try using the --replace option to replace the current window manager. /usr/bin/compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0 * Searching for installed applications... I have no title bars, for instance. peter@linux:~> compiz-manager Checking for Xgl: present. Checking for nVidia: not present. Checking for Xgl: present. Enabling Xgl with nVidia drivers... I also have all the fancy wobbly windows effects. The lot, including the compiz icon in the system tray - which I've never seen before. ^C peter@linux:~> I now have no window decorations and am unable to interact with the KDE. The only option is [Alt][Ctrl][Bksp]. When I log back in, I'm back to the default state of some effects but not the works. I confess to being a naive user, so I may be bringing this upon myself. openSUSE 10.3 on AMD64 dual core Radeon X1300/X1550 card with flgrx kernel driver. Any observations would be gratefully received. Cheers Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes. I rather asked for that, didn't I? :-D The thing is, though, it doesn't really address the problem. Running compiz-manager --replace is effectively what is happening on the second call: but just to demonstrate, here's what happens when I do it explicitly: peter@linux:~> compiz-manager & [1] 887 peter@linux:~> Checking for Xgl: present. Checking for nVidia: not present. Checking for Xgl: present. Enabling Xgl with nVidia drivers... I expected that once I'd activated compiz it would work the same way all the time: instead, it sort of half works when I start up, and then only works (almost) fully when I mess with the compiz-manager command as above. I never get any Emerald windows activated, no matter what I do, and I can't seem to get the raindrops effect, either. Neither of these are of any earth-shattering importance, but I like to play and I'm puzzled about what's not going right. Should I put a call to compiz-manager --replace in /etc/profile (or the local version, whatever it's called)? you seem to have missing packages, use 1-click link from there, it should install everything required.
peter@linux:~> su Password: linux:/home/peter # xgl-switch --enable-xgl bash: xgl-switch: command not found linux:/home/peter # locate xgl-switch
Xgl is not required, use it only if you have problem with AIGLX. Ciao -J -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That's how I got it in the first place, but I did it again. It says it downloads and installs simple-cssm, but if it has, it isn't on the path for either me or root. Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

From yast software manager, search and remove everything "compiz" and
try the 1-click install again. Pastebin the output of rpm -a | grep compiz && rpm -qa | grep ccsm if it still does not work. Ciao -J -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Aargh! It's ccsm, isn't it. Not cssm! I can be an idiot, sometimes. But yes, I'd used ccsm. The effects are pretty much all there - but not when I start up. Enable effects from "simple-ccsm" or in main-menu look for "Desktop Effects" -J -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well, the scattergun approach seemed to work. Compiz is now activated on startup. Emerald still doesn't work. If I select it from the Window Decorator option of the compiz system tray icon, all that happens is that all the window decorations disappear. I tried the stuff on the Web page by the way, but to no avail. Thanks for all your help. If you want to leave it at that, that's fine. You've given a huge helping hand as it is. If you have any other suggestions, though, I'm willing to give them a go.
