[opensuse] A question about cdrecord
Guys, I am trying to write a script and I am lost with cdrecord. What I am trying to do is grad the dir I need to backup incase my box crashes, then burn that to DVD so I can take it off site. My problem is that I don't know how to translate my recorder /dev/hda to something cdrecord will understand. -- -- Command, n.: Statement presented by a human and accepted by a computer in such a manner as to make the human feel as if he is in control. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

First of all, which version? /dev/sr0 is now used, as of 10.2 or 10.3. /dev/hda is your first hard drive. Do a "ll /dev/cdrom (or /dev/dvd)" to get the real device. lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2008-07-14 03:27 /dev/cdrom -> sr0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2008-07-14 03:27 /dev/cdrom1 -> sr1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2008-07-14 03:27 /dev/cdrw -> sr0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2008-07-14 03:27 /dev/cdrw1 -> sr1 or lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2008-07-14 03:27 /dev/dvd -> sr0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2008-07-14 03:27 /dev/dvd1 -> sr1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2008-07-14 03:27 /dev/dvdrw -> sr0 Ed -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hmm... I assume grad == grab ... Which scripting language? SuSE has used wodim rather than cdrecord for some time. (cdrecord is usually a link to wodim). However to burn to iso you need to create an iso image with mkisofs then burn for CD or use growisofs... Relevant man pages are... man wodim man mkisofs man growisofs I have perl module in pre-alpha that interacts with various DVD/CD tools to copy files to dvd or cd which may give you a few ideas in Perl. But if you dont know Perl this will not help a lot. - -- ============================================================================== I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone. Yes, grad = grab. I am dyslexic. Yes, grad = grab. I am dyslexic. Still does answer the question I asked.
No criticism intended, just needed to make certain that a couple of alternatives (grade and guard) were not meant. You indicated elsewhere that you were using SLES 9 and I know little about this version, I am not even sure whether this uses the 2.4 or 2.6 kernel (there are significant difference in CD/DVD support). However, I am fairly certain this would have the original cdrecord so please disregard comments about wodim. There are significant differences between what cdrecord supports and wodim (and growisofs capabilities). I think your best bet would be to contact a cdrecord related forum and supply them with the details of the version of cdrecord/growisofs in use when you contact them. Or give the list a bit more detail about you have and how you intend to use it, so someone who has the relevant experience can give more appropriate assistance. - -- ============================================================================== I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone. GT, Thanks. I found the answer. Bad part I had to output the info to txt file then use text to way, so if anyone else who is dyslexlic, here a nice way to get information you need. There are two ways info/man <package> | festival --tts Or info <package> > <package>.txt ; cat <package>.txt | text2wave -o <package>.wav ; lame <package>.wav <package>.mp3 Anyway here what I got. cdrecord -scanbus scsibus0: 0,0,0 0) 'DELL ' 'SuSE ' 'V1.0' Removable Disk Side note, done any one know how to make that line into a fuction? -- -- Command, n.: Statement presented by a human and accepted by a computer in such a manner as to make the human feel as if he is in control. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You can cut out some of this, including the two intermediate files, and reduce it down to just: info <package> | text2wave | lame - <package>.mp3 Regards, David Bolt -- Team Acorn: http://www.distributed.net/ OGR-P2 @ ~100Mnodes RC5-72 @ ~15Mkeys SUSE 10.1 32 | | openSUSE 10.3 32bit | openSUSE 11.0 32bit | openSUSE 10.2 64bit | openSUSE 10.3 64bit | openSUSE 11.0 64bit RISC OS 3.6 | TOS 4.02 | openSUSE 10.3 PPC | RISC OS 3.11 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
