Then your experience is sadly lacking if you are unable to open a terminal window in kde4. mc is *normally* installed and available on *most* distros.
Using the default install on at least 10.3, mc isn't installed by default. Why? I have no idea. I don't remember what I did on the install of 11.0. Maybe it's back as default. Either way, I make sure it's installed. Kinda like that swiss army knife of file managers..
