Ekiga is free and standards compliant. User base is around 200.000 accounts but you can of course cross networks. Works fine. Skype is closed source, works ok and sucks so bad (no reliable quality, audio configuration is obscure, nothing to tweak if you run into problems) I wouldn't touch it with protective gloves if it weren't for the massive amounts of people who are on skype and expect you to be as well.
