[opensuse] openSUSE-friendly webcam & videoconferencing SW
Folks, I have a Dell Latitude D830 laptop (Core 2 Duo/nVidia Quadro NVS 140M graphics/2GB RAM/USB but no FireWire) and would like to add a portable webcam to it to provide me with video conferencing ability. I'm looking for recommendations on which webcam I should purchase (doesn't have to be ultra high-resolution, but not low-end either), which works well in a dual-headed Linux (SUSE 10.3) environment. I also need advice regarding what video conferencing SW I should mainly focus on. My immediate need is to conference with a Mac user who's used to using iChat. I have both DSL and cable broadband available, so bandwidth is generally not an issue, though something that also works well at lower speeds would be nice to have. Thanks in advance for any recommendations. I suspect this query may engender a lot of different, "religious" opinions. :-) --ted ================================================================= T E D M A R K O W I T Z Chief Architect, Cognosys LLC http://www.cognosys.net 203-655-2400 (phone/fax) 203-984-6565 (cell) tjm@cognosys.net (email) TJMarkowitz (AIM) ================================================================= -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If you don't mind closed-source - skype works ok with 10.3, and the latest version has webcam support. You can check which cams are ok on skype forums. And I believe there is skype version for MacOS X. -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny) Even the most advanced equipment in the hands of the ignorant is just a pile of scrap. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The philips spc500nc works (640x480 @ 30fps). It is uvc compliant so you run it with the generic uvcvideo driver -- just install the according uvcvideo-kmp-[default|bigsmp ...] kernel module. Test with mplayer tv:// -tv driver=4vl2 or by checking whether /dev/video appears after plugging the camera in or in Ekiga.

Ekiga is free and standards compliant. User base is around 200.000 accounts but you can of course cross networks. Works fine. Skype is closed source, works ok and sucks so bad (no reliable quality, audio configuration is obscure, nothing to tweak if you run into problems) I wouldn't touch it with protective gloves if it weren't for the massive amounts of people who are on skype and expect you to be as well.
