When I insert a CD, amarok pops up a dialog box asking if I want to play it.
The problem is that even though it shows the CD tracks and appears to be playing, there's no sound. It can play mp3 and ogg files. Other apps can play the CD.
Since you let it slip that you were running 64-bit, I'd tend to chalk your multimedia woes up to quirks of the 64-bit install. I've given up on x86_64, for all but the most vanilla generic servers. For any sort of desktop use, or for servers which will need 3rd party apps/drivers support, I've learned the hard way that 32 bit is the only way to go, for now.
YMMV -

It was true for me on SLES 10 and even OS 10.2, but I haven't specifically tried a 64-bit 10.3 install - I'd love to hear that everything now works in 64-bit, no differently from 32 bit except faster, but I fear we are not yet there. I'd love to be proved wrong, though.
