[opensuse] Making MP3s - SUSE 10.3
How the #@$@#$ do you make MP3's in SUSE 10.3? There was a utility in 10.2 that I used to create them. Kaffine appears able to create .ogg files, but not mp3. However, I don't have a portable player that handles .ogg. I can't figure out how to get Amarok to even play a CD!!! tnx jk -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

There are all sorts of ways - I use grip, others use k3b, or kaudiocreator.

hmm, I think adding the usual stuff from packman should do the trick. There's a writeup on the suse wiki about external repositories.
I can't figure out how to get Amarok to even play a CD!!!
When I insert a CD, amarok pops up a dialog box asking if I want to play it. Joe -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I found it in another message.

The problem is that even though it shows the CD tracks and appears to be playing, there's no sound. It can play mp3 and ogg files. Other apps can play the CD. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Since you let it slip that you were running 64-bit, I'd tend to chalk your multimedia woes up to quirks of the 64-bit install. I've given up on x86_64, for all but the most vanilla generic servers. For any sort of desktop use, or for servers which will need 3rd party apps/drivers support, I've learned the hard way that 32 bit is the only way to go, for now. It was true for me on SLES 10 and even OS 10.2, but I haven't specifically tried a 64-bit 10.3 install - I'd love to hear that everything now works in 64-bit, no differently from 32 bit except faster, but I fear we are not yet there. Please try to play these WMV videos with MPlayer: http://tinyurl.com/oxf5o Note: the .exe files there aren't really executables...those are compressed files. You can uncompress them with "unzip whatever.exe" I remember having problems on 64-bit SUSE. It was something related to the win32-codecs that didn't work in MPlayer 64. This was a showstopper for me along the Adobe flash plugin.. I decided to stick with the 32-bit version as Joe mentioned here. It was more than a year ago so things probably changed. I downloaded and unzipped one or two fo these video files. The all displayed nicely on my newly built 64-bit machine although I needed some codecs like win32 and libdvdcss. However, so far no sound from these video files only gorgeous pictures. On my 32-bit machine I do get sound from mplayer with these files. So we are almost there for 64-bit. I wonder what I am missing for the sound?
Same with my 10.0 64 bit install. According to mplayer output it can not load the w32codec (the orig. wmv/wma codecs) so it uses ffmpegs ffwmv3 video codec, and does not find suitable audio codec. That explains why we do not have sound. On 32 bit system mplayer uses the codecs from wion32codec pack. In my system, it's only Amarok that doesn't work with CD's . Other apps, such as Kaffine work fine. Besides, do CD's need a codec? BTW, how do you get rid of that "video" crap in Kaffine, when a CD is playing? I wish they wouldn't load down apps with such garbage. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Sounds like a LAME problem... I believe for proprietary reasons, SuSE omits an mp3 codec from the base package. It has to be added separately. The opensource mp3 codec is called LAME, there should be an available package at the packman repository: http://packman.unixheads.com/suse/10.3/i586/ That should cure all that ails you! (You may need to do some reconfiguring of amarok and Kaffine to make sure it finds lame) Good luck, Regis ps. You really should consider getting an ogg player! That seems to have done the trick, though I had to get the 64 bit version. I would prefer ogg, but my player (Nokia N800) doesn't support it (yet). -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
