We should and we do embrace patent free audio/video codecs with openSUSE. Thats the way to go.
Absolutely. I rip all my CDs in ogg format, and my kids have to put up with it, even though they probably feel that mp3 would be easier for them. But once you drink some clue-juice, you have to admit that this sort of purity may not be possible for everyone. They may work in situations where they *have* to use proprietary formats like Quicktime or WMV. Do you ignore this, or try to grapple with it? Ideally you ignore it, but suppose the only thing holding them back from switching to Linux is running these proprietary formats? And how many people on this list have Packman's w32codecs installed? Quite a few, I think. To my mind you might as well do this upfront and openly instead of keeping it as a back-alley thing. It doesn't mean you stop evangelising about free formats, but once someone has made a switch to Linux they're far more likely to see what you're getting at than if they're marooned on Windows with a bunch of proprietary files they can't work on using anything else. -- Pob hwyl / Best wishes Kevin Donnelly www.kyfieithu.co.uk - KDE yn Gymraeg www.eurfa.org.uk - Geiriadur rhydd i'r Gymraeg www.rhedadur.org.uk - Rhedeg berfau Cymraeg www.cymrux.org.uk - Linux Cymraeg ar un CD --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
