Well, ftp.gwdg.de yields the the same result, install freezes computer at "Initializing catalogs..."
This part does take a long time even if using the CD's plus the fact that the mirrors are very busy so please be patient.
You probably missed "freezes" in the description of my problem. When it gets to "Initializing catalogs..." stage it is responsive to the keyboard and mouse. The hourglass is spinning. Then, after some time, hourglass freezes, it does not respond to the mouse, and I am not able even to switch to a different virtual console. I fail to understand what causes installation to freeze and I do not expect it to wake up from uninterrruptable sleep, no matter how long I wait. I don't think it's a connectivity issue either. I am getting quite good response time both from kernel.org and ftp.gwdg.de. If I have to be patient, what's the estimated wait time in "Initializing catalogs..." state? 24? 48 hours? I thought the idea of network install was to cut on download time of iso images as I am definitely not going to use all packages from 6 CDs. Apparently, I am wrong in this assumption. I started downloading isos to see if I can put 10.1GM on this laptop. What is also strange, I used network install to put 10.1 beta2 on this machine. Never seen "Initializing catalogs..." problem back then.
