Hi, When I try network install from /opensuse/distribution/SL-10.1/inst-source the machine freezes at "Initializing catalogues" message. I am using mirrors.kernel.org mirror. It loads root filesystem fine, I select language, confirm license, select "Update", then it proceeds to initializing catalogues, the hourglass is spinning. Machine is responsive at that point, I am able to switch between virtual consoles. There is also activity on the network, so I guess it is still downloading something. Shortly after that machine freezes. It does not respond neither to keyboard nor to mouse. I have to use the power button. I've had the same problem never being able to perform network install from factory since RC3 was released. SL-10.1/inst-source looks broken in the same way. Is it something yet to be fixed in inst-source (as recent security anouncement points that online update over the network does not work at the moment) or is it me doing something wrong? Thanks, -Kastus

Well, ftp.gwdg.de yields the the same result, install freezes computer at "Initializing catalogs..." I guess it's not a broken mirror, it's broken inst-source. Were anybody on the list successfull installing 10.1 over HTTP/FTP from inst-source from the network? Thanks, -Kastus

This part does take a long time even if using the CD's plus the fact that the mirrors are very busy so please be patient. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998

You probably missed "freezes" in the description of my problem. When it gets to "Initializing catalogs..." stage it is responsive to the keyboard and mouse. The hourglass is spinning. Then, after some time, hourglass freezes, it does not respond to the mouse, and I am not able even to switch to a different virtual console. I fail to understand what causes installation to freeze and I do not expect it to wake up from uninterrruptable sleep, no matter how long I wait. I don't think it's a connectivity issue either. I am getting quite good response time both from kernel.org and ftp.gwdg.de. If I have to be patient, what's the estimated wait time in "Initializing catalogs..." state? 24? 48 hours? I thought the idea of network install was to cut on download time of iso images as I am definitely not going to use all packages from 6 CDs. Apparently, I am wrong in this assumption. I started downloading isos to see if I can put 10.1GM on this laptop. What is also strange, I used network install to put 10.1 beta2 on this machine. Never seen "Initializing catalogs..." problem back then.

Sort of. I installed 10.1 by http from ftp.tu-chemnitz.de. However, the initial install conked out about two thirds of the way through. After rebooting, I couldn't log in because the installation process didn't get around to setting a root password. I booted to single user mode, set the password, configured the installation source in yast and carried on the network installation. I've always had problems with network installations of suse regardless of version, mirror, protocol, etc. However, I've never had a machine completely lock up on me during the installation process so I think your problem is probably unrelated to the fact that you're doing a network install. Have you tried downloading CD1 and doing a minimal console-based install? That's my preferred installation method these days: minimal CD install then install the rest of the system over the network. Sorry this post has been a bit long and more that a bit boring. Cheers, James.

It's actually frozen, not just working hard? "Initializing catalogs..." does seem to take forever ...

I retrieved the 10.1 inst-source from a mirror and have installed a couple of machines over NFS - no problems so far. Not quite what you were asking, I know ... /Per Jessen, Zürich

It freezes. Here as well on a Siemens Lifebook. Just five minutes ago after "ages" (1/2 hour?) of initializing catalogs. I am retrying right now without activating the add on media sources.

Not me. Yet. Guido

Same problem. Freezes after about 1/2 hour initialising catalogs. I think I am going to download CD1 and continue network installation from there. But not today. Guido
