Nothing seems to be able to unmute the speakers on this machine. As I mentioned above, everything has been checked and as far as Linux seems to be concerned it's working nicely. From all my investigations, it would seem that way as well. I honestly believe there is something about the computer that needs to be activated or maybe it can't be under Linux. Afterall, it was built to accommodate Windows, sadly. As Sunny pointed out the buttons don't control the hardware directly, only thru software.
Just for the experiment - have you tried to plug headphones? Is there a sound? Have you tried other distro? Knoppix comes to mind. Or yet another OS :-P? This will help to isolate a hw problem with the speakers themselves.
Tried the headphones, no luck there either. Haven't tried another Linux and don't yet have a XP cd to reinstall from. It is one of those they put the restore on the hard drive. The user failed to make an emergency disc, so I'll have to borrow an XP disc from someone. Odd thing though, I installed Win98se on the thing today, but Win2000 wouldn't install, just stopped when going into the setup. Ahh, the world of laptops. I think I would rather have a good Palm Pilot. Lee
