Hey all, Happy to say SuSE 10.0 installed nicely on the Gateway M520 laptop! Had a few niggling problems with one left, but I think the computer likes having a good OS on it! ;o) For owners of such machines or anyone that has a hint, sound is working, but isn't working. Confused? Me too! Everything shows it working, volumes up, nothing muted, modules loaded, etc. Checked all files related, made user part of audio group, but no sound yet. CDs play, but no sound. No errors in any log messages. I'm thinking at this point there is something on the computer that needs to be turned on for sound to escape. I don't have a manual, so don't know what that might be. Any thoughts/help? TIA, Lee

Well I assume it's not something simple like a few buttons that the Thinkpads have. You can kill the sound by hitting one button... or raise or lower the volume by two other buttons.... Most laptops would have something similar I would think so you can kill the sound easily when on an airplane or such.

Yes, thanks Bruce, downloaded a manual and found those buttons! It mentions pressing both up and down volume buttons to mute or unmute, but it also mentions about software that runs in XP. Doesn't have an affect on sound, so far. I'm still looking though, as I'm almost certain, it's something silly like that. Also finally found where the speakers are at on the crazy thing. :o) Lee

Uhhhh, Silly question but coming in late on this. You did open up a mixer and check all of the settings, no? Some times when I have these problems I run alsaconfig again. If it plays a sound at the end you're set. Bob S.

Usually these buttons do not control the hardware directly. They are tapped by the OS to perform its work. And again, usually, such a tapping software exists only for the this other OS. Maybe something exists in the KDE or Gnome world, but I do not know. -- -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny)

Curious as to the module your sound card needs. Might it be the one that Anders has noted as being flaky from a recent thread on sound?

Further checking shows everything is as it should be in Linux. I'm still thinking it's something to do with the computer and finding a way to turn it on

This may be a very basic question, however in reading your post, only CD's are specifically mentioned as not working. How have you tested the sound system to determine that is doesn't work? Just by trying to play a CD? Have you tried system sounds or a test in Yast or something similar? A game? Is this specific to playing CD's? -- Don

Don, I can see where you might think CDs were the only problem, but I just included that as an example to further show my tests. Nothing seems to be able to unmute the speakers on this machine. As I mentioned above, everything has been checked and as far as Linux seems to be concerned it's working nicely. From all my investigations, it would seem that way as well. I honestly believe there is something about the computer that needs to be activated or maybe it can't be under Linux. Afterall, it was built to accommodate Windows, sadly. As Sunny pointed out the buttons don't control the hardware directly, only thru software. thanks, Lee

Just for the experiment - have you tried to plug headphones? Is there a sound? Have you tried other distro? Knoppix comes to mind. Or yet another OS :-P? This will help to isolate a hw problem with the speakers themselves. -- -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny)

Tried the headphones, no luck there either. Haven't tried another Linux and don't yet have a XP cd to reinstall from. It is one of those they put the restore on the hard drive. The user failed to make an emergency disc, so I'll have to borrow an XP disc from someone. Odd thing though, I installed Win98se on the thing today, but Win2000 wouldn't install, just stopped when going into the setup. Ahh, the world of laptops. I think I would rather have a good Palm Pilot. Lee

Don't know whether it's of any help, but I discovered something peculiar with sound in 10.0: whatever sound is played (stream, an application like XMMS, or whatever), if I fire up Realplayer then the volume is adjusted with the Realplayer button, it seems to overrule everything else. ??? Is every sound piped through Realplayer?

Actually, I believe that RP is the only thing that comes with SuSE 10.0 that works for mp3 and such things. Once everything is replaced with suitable Packman files, all is right with the world again. ;o) Lee
