Perhaps using vga=0x0314 on the boot prompt will work. This tells the boot sequence to use 800x600 for the boot splash.
I don't think this will work!
Instead Gerard needs to startup his system in text mode (not only the boot process itself) and configure the "new" monitor with sax.
Gerard, you might try to Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to exit from the X server. If this works and you can login as root using a text screen you should run "init 3" to leave graphics mode. Then you can configure your graphics mode using sax2 and afterwards do a "init 5" again. I think that should do it.

Also you may want to save the XF86config file first so that all you have to do when you get back home is copy it back. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge
