Change screen at boot time
Hi Folks I have installed SUSE 9.2 at my place , all working fine , when I took the PC to my Father (spreading the word) and tried to boot up using his old monitor the initial boot screen comes up fine but when I push enter to continue the screen turns to garbage , even if I let the start-up complete and try switch to a new logon screen (no GUI) it is still unreadable . Other than reinstalling with the old screen attached what are my options ?, The boot screen does not have an option to change to 800X600, If I boot of the install CD1 can I set the screen there, Use Knoppix ?. Thanks in advance Gerard __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Standard Bank Disclaimer and Confidentiality Note This e-mail, its attachments and any rights attaching hereto are, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise, the property of Standard Bank Group Limited and/or its subsidiaries ("the Group"). Perhaps using vga=0x0314 on the boot prompt will work. This tells the boot sequence to use 800x600 for the boot splash. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

I don't think this will work! Instead Gerard needs to startup his system in text mode (not only the boot process itself) and configure the "new" monitor with sax. Gerard, you might try to Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to exit from the X server. If this works and you can login as root using a text screen you should run "init 3" to leave graphics mode. Then you can configure your graphics mode using sax2 and afterwards do a "init 5" again. I think that should do it. Martin

Also you may want to save the XF86config file first so that all you have to do when you get back home is copy it back. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge
