Hi,
Is is just me, or have the UK FTP mirrors stopped working in YOU as of a few days ago (6?)? I tried all three (anorien, mirrorservice and mirror), and all just stalled at the "Receiving information about new updates" dialogue box. (I notice that plig is no longer listed ... I wonder why ...)
Using ftp.suse.com does work still, and using the http version of anorien also works. So, has something odd happened to all three mirrors, or is something wrong on my machine?
You can still get suse from http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/ftp.suse.com/pub/ The problems seem to arise from when JISC decided to give the contract for www.mirror.ac.uk to eduserve. The new mirror.ac.uk service just isn't the same quality as the old one. mirrorservice.org is still being run by the University of Kent. It was run jointly by Kent and Lancaster. The Kent machine IIRC is a Solaris box with a cabinet of hot-swappable disks. I think the hardware is paid for by Sun and I guess they still pay a couple of people to keep it all going, but without official funding and the support of Lancaster, I presume they've had to cut down on what they can provide. Mirrorservice.org now also run an rsync server. I haven't tried this yet, but I'd bet if it works it's a lot faster than ftp. -- JDL
