Hi, Is is just me, or have the UK FTP mirrors stopped working in YOU as of a few days ago (6?)? I tried all three (anorien, mirrorservice and mirror), and all just stalled at the "Receiving information about new updates" dialogue box. (I notice that plig is no longer listed ... I wonder why ...) Using ftp.suse.com does work still, and using the http version of anorien also works. So, has something odd happened to all three mirrors, or is something wrong on my machine? -- Bill

You can still get suse from http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/ftp.suse.com/pub/ The problems seem to arise from when JISC decided to give the contract for www.mirror.ac.uk to eduserve. The new mirror.ac.uk service just isn't the same quality as the old one. mirrorservice.org is still being run by the University of Kent. It was run jointly by Kent and Lancaster. The Kent machine IIRC is a Solaris box with a cabinet of hot-swappable disks. I think the hardware is paid for by Sun and I guess they still pay a couple of people to keep it all going, but without official funding and the support of Lancaster, I presume they've had to cut down on what they can provide. Mirrorservice.org now also run an rsync server. I haven't tried this yet, but I'd bet if it works it's a lot faster than ftp. -- JDL

Hear, hear! What was JISC doing? But thanks for that link, will check it out and glad to hear Kent is still putting something up. Best Fergus

I can't get data from mirror.ac.uk. I'm not behind a firewall, but it just doesn't serve me stuff. I suspect it's something to do with active/passive ftp sessions, but I can't find anything about how to flip this switch in Yast. mirrorservice.com works fine for me, but I dont get 6Mb/sec from it :( Cheers, George -- George Barnett Reality Engineer m: (+44) 778 884 7205 e: george@alink.co.za After living in New York, you trust nobody, but you believe everything. Assuming you actually mean mirrorservice.org, they're the same thing, mirrorservice.org is the new name, I suspect mirror.ac.uk is being fased out (JISC changed how they allocated their funds you see). As for your transfer rates, remember, there are lots of different factors that affect this, it's the UK Mirror Service, and you're in South Africa from what I can ascertain, now, my experience of UK-ZA connections is that they can be ropey at best... :) -- James Ogley james@usr-local-bin.org GNOME for SuSE: http://usr-local-bin.org/rpms

mirror.ac.uk isn't being phased out. It's funded by JISC until 2007. The old mirror.ac.uk (which was the old hensa archive for those who can remeber back that far) is now mirrorservice.org (but not mirrorsevice.com). It is continuing, but no longer funded by JISC and so with fewer resources than before, but with some things mirror.ac.uk dropped.
