What's the problem with KMail? It supports both SMTP/POP and IMAP. Why wouldn't it work with available free email providers?
I've tried Freenet, GMX, and Lycos. All three rejects my password or username. Each time saying that one or the other is bad. I contacted Lycos and they just bluntly said that I either had to "upgrade" to IE or pay for "special" services.
When you configured the new Receiving account, did you go to the "Extras" tab and click the "Check What the Server Supports" button? This will make sure KMail's server interaction options are consistent with the server's capabilities. I don't believe there's anything about "IE" (actually, Outlook or Outlook Express, I assume) that makes it uniquely acceptable for these email providers.
