Also, if this is a scsi-based tape, with linux I think you have to call stinit once before the tape (/dev/st0) is accessible.
At least that is what I have to do, but I have a high-end tape drive (LTO).
I don't know where that little gem is documented. Someone on the list told me about it a year ago.
I'll try to grab the unused DLT4000 in our company and put it in an external case. That way I might actually be able to connect it to my server. That will probably be my weekend project to get the backup up and running. So far I didn't use stinit, but I recall that I had to check the existence of some devices before using the tape. Sandy
