A google search indicates that the solution was to kill suseplugger ????
the solution is to modify the file ~/.kde/share/config/susepluggerrc [General] UseCDAutoStart=true UseCDMediaDetect=true

To all that have some interest in this and since I was the original poster, I'll pass along what the user, locally, found to work. Turns out after replacing his cdrom drive with a bit newer model, his problem went away. Understand though, his other drive was manufactured in 2000, so it was not so old either, but it was a mitsumi drive! Mitsumi has for a long time been very Linux negative. This is another example of their bad judgement. I remember having a difficult time with 3 of their cdrw drives when I first began using Linux. Later I determined they were just not compatible with Linux for the most part! Back to the point at hand though, replacing the drive did fix the problem. regards, Lee -- --- KMail v1.7.2 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.2 --- Registered Linux User #225206 "Don't let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game!"
