Since some time now I have constant problems with connecting to my ISP. After a short period of time the connection is disrupted. In normal cases the dialer (I am using kinternet) is trying to reconnect but this often causes the download of email, website to disrupt. My connection today does not stand longer as one or two minute and is sometimes as short as ten seconds. As I have to pay per dialing with a standard cost and after connection per minute the disconnecting is not only irritant but also costly. I looked into the man pages of pppd and others but do not seem to get my answers there. A google search is not possible for the moment. Could somebody help me on my way?
I've been keeping an eye on this thread, but no-one seems to
have suggested the most obvious source of problems.
You say you're getting connection times as short as 10 seconds.
You should seriously consider whether
a) Your ISP is unreliable
b) Your telephone line is unreliable
c) Your modem is unreliable
i.e. look at sources external to your SuSE setup.
These can be difficult to test, however, unless you are in
a position to "swap" resources. If you can borrow a modem from
someone who isn't having problems, but you still have problems,
then it probably isn't your modem.
You could test (a+b) by using your phone line with a different
machine (e.g. from a friend whose setup works with his line),
dialling up to his ISP from your line with his machine. If this
fails, then it's almost certainly (a) or (b).
As for (a) vs (b), well you could try changing ISP and if this
solves it then it was (a).
To test (b) directly you would have to take your machine somewhere
else and try it from there, using the same ISP. You could also try
getting the telephone company to test your line.
I hope this helps. Unreliability "downstream" of your telephone
socket is an exasperating situation to be in. (I always have a
slight problem with the line, but once it used to be very bad.
It was only when the phone itself finally became almost unusable
through noise that they came out and ran a test on my actual
line from my end. This failed so indisputably that the engineer
replaced the overhead cable to my house, thereby discovering that
the insulation had failed, allowing rainwater to get into the
cable.)
Best wishes, and good luck!
Ted.
