I'm new to Linux and am trying to update my KDE3.2.1 to 3.3.1. When I do the update from supplemental and then check dependences I get a list of over 40 programs it wants to remove and several it says it needs. Is there a document somewhere that explains the steps to use when dependences are found. I don't want to just delete stuff and I'm assuming I can use YAST to get the programs (like update to arts) that it says it needs.
I search the SUSE website but only found reference to updates and YAST. A readme file would be fine.
I'm using SuSE 9.1 Pro. -- Russ
A list of the programs it wants to ermove would help you should be able to find all the programes you need for the upgrade on your CDś or the Suse web sites..
I have upgraede from stock out of the box to 3,3,1 as the updates come out with no great hassle , which is more than i can say for the darn Gnome stuff that is a total cockup and does not run now at all (mind you it only crawled before) ..

Peter here is the output from the dependence checker. As you can see there is a long list. I still not sure if I need to delete all these and if YAST will get all the need files from the FTP server. #### YaST2 conflicts list - generated 2004-10-15 15:13:01 ####

Hi Russ
From what i can see there it appeares to be down to yast trying to install stuff then finding it needs the libs installed first not finding them and complaining .
I had thought that yast was a little more inteligent than that when it comes to installing KDE but obviousley not .
I have to admit i tend to pull the updates down using wget then install them from a directory using "rpm -vUh --force --nodeps *rpm" i know there are people out there that are going to say dont under any circumstances do that but it works every time for me and i very rarely get any problems at all .
But also when doing an update like that i come out of graphical mode completely with Ctrl+Alt+F1 login as root then run init 3 carry out the update run init 5 and bingo KDE up and running ..
Hope this gives you a little help maybe others casn offer other ways of doing similar ..
YMMV
Pete .

Termination time is around the corner .. I actually recieved another response that gave me a way to do the update using YAST with the FTP site and the install CD and the system update function. It worked and all the conflicts were resolved. The only problem I see is I lost my distribution lists in kmail, contacts are still there. I can recreate the lists.
Everything else is working so far, stll need to check a few things. Thanks again for your response and I'll keep it filed for future reference. The only reason not to end MS is the money my wifehas made and is making on their stock. Once I get scribus understood and working to replace my publisher stuff I will only need to set up a web server and test environment for the webpage I support. It runs on a Linux sever and will be easier to support from Linux. Are their any good FTP programs you know of? -- Russ
