I'm new to Linux and am trying to update my KDE3.2.1 to 3.3.1. When I do the update from supplemental and then check dependences I get a list of over 40 programs it wants to remove and several it says it needs. Is there a document somewhere that explains the steps to use when dependences are found. I don't want to just delete stuff and I'm assuming I can use YAST to get the programs (like update to arts) that it says it needs. I search the SUSE website but only found reference to updates and YAST. A readme file would be fine. I'm using SuSE 9.1 Pro. -- Russ

go to www.rpm.pbone.net and type in whatever yast says that it needs, whether a package or a .so file. (I suggest that you use the adanced search)

A list of the programs it wants to ermove would help you should be able to find all the programes you need for the upgrade on your CDś or the Suse web sites.. I have upgraede from stock out of the box to 3,3,1 as the updates come out with no great hassle , which is more than i can say for the darn Gnome stuff that is a total cockup and does not run now at all (mind you it only crawled before) .. Hi Russ From what i can see there it appeares to be down to yast trying to install stuff then finding it needs the libs installed first not finding them and complaining . I had thought that yast was a little more inteligent than that when it comes to installing KDE but obviousley not . I have to admit i tend to pull the updates down using wget then install them from a directory using "rpm -vUh --force --nodeps *rpm" i know there are people out there that are going to say dont under any circumstances do that but it works every time for me and i very rarely get any problems at all . But also when doing an update like that i come out of graphical mode completely with Ctrl+Alt+F1 login as root then run init 3 carry out the update run init 5 and bingo KDE up and running .. Hope this gives you a little help maybe others casn offer other ways of doing similar .. It worked and all the conflicts were resolved. The only problem I see is I lost my distribution lists in kmail, contacts are still there. I can recreate the lists.
Everything else is working so far, stll need to check a few things. Thanks again for your response and I'll keep it filed for future reference. To be honest, the best "ftp program" I've found is Konqueror. just enter ftp://user:password@domain.com, and you'll be logged in, and be able to open files via a "virtual file system." Konq treats the FTP connection almost the same as if you had the files stored locally on your system. This also works in numerous KDE programs that bring up a file requestor. Want to open a comma-separated file in OOo's spreadsheet app? File > Open > ftp://user:pw:domain.com, browse to file, open, make changes, save... It goes right back on the server. I used to use gftp all the time until I found out about using Konqueror as an FTP client. Steve

Steve Thanks Steve, I'll try that. What I'm trying to do is develop and update webpages on my system, then transfer them to the ISP that runs our webpage. In the past I used Personnel Webserver on WinME to test developed pages. Then FTP to transfer them to the ISP Server anfter making mods to allow for the fact the ISP ran a version of Linux. Now I plan to install a server for testing under SUSE, then FTP the completed pages and updates. Is Apache the right server to install for testing.

Yep -- Apache's it... (Or Apache2... But, I've never even installed it myself - but I'm sure there's lots of people on the list here that can help if the need arises)

Apache2 works great for that. There's a little bit to learning where to put things and possibly setting up access to development directories for your stuff, but it's certainly doable. Good luck, Jim

No problem, easy, it's just a little configuration, there are the config files of apache, you might need to go through them to customize your setup to your needs. But it works out of the box. Just install it (apache or the new version, apache2), start it "rcapache2 start" (as root, in a terminal), and it runs. Put your files in the document directory, and your server will show them. Better use this kind of URL: ftp://user@domain.com and fill in the password in the dialogbox that pops up. This way the password is not stored somewhere, it merely travels unencrypted over the net. :-o

Here is a safer option: Set up an ssh account instead of an ftp account. Use scp or rsync --rsh=ssh to copy resp. files or files & directories. As a bonus ;) Konqy supports this too in the form of the fish:// protocol. See Info Center -> Protocols -> fish. Usage: fish://user@domain.com (a valid ssh account is needed at the domain.com server). It seems even possible to setup ssh on W*nd*ws machines, so fish might work too, but I am not sure about that... Cheers, Leen

The main problem with using --force is that you completely disable rpm's sanity and consistency checks, so if you get a bad rpm, rpm won't warn you that it's about to do bad things, like overwrite files, or install unsigned rpms. And ignoring dependencies will get you into trouble, if only when you do a system upgrade So --force works fine as long as you only do it on good rpms. The question then is how far do you trust the rpm packagers?
arts requires libjack.so.0 digikam requires libImlib2.so.1 digikam requires libsqlite.so.0
libjack.so.0 is provided by the jack.rpm package on the 9.1 pro CDs libImlib2.so.1 is provided by the imlib2.rpm package on the 9.1 pro CDs, or the updated rpm from packman.links2linux.de libsqlite.so.0 is provided by the sqlite.rpm package on the 9.1 pro CDs You might want to check what the installer wants to do to those packages. Maybe they're marked as "don't touch" or something

I'm new to Linux and am trying to update my KDE3.2.1 to 3.3.1. When I do the update from supplemental and then check dependences I get a list of over 40 programs it wants to remove and several it says it needs. Is there a document somewhere that explains the steps to use when dependences are found.
Easiest (for me) is to do the following with YaST: Add the ftp.gwdg.de ftp site as an http installation source. You'll need to specify the exact directory for the KDE supplemental "yast source" folder. Move this installation source above your original DVD (or however you installed SuSE) source, make sure that both sources are "On" and that your original installation source is available. Finish with this YaST module and then launch the System Update module. On the first screen, allow YaST to create a backup if you like. Then on the next screen, choose "Update installed packages only" and uncheck "delete unmaintained packages". Resolve any conflicts and after YaST finishes, log off and log back in to get your new KDE. Have fun, Mark -- ____________________________________________________ Another Message From... L. You are welcome. I find I also lose filters in Kmail when I do this, but they are pretty easy to recreate. Next time I'll back up my .kde directory first and then figure out where all the filters are (probably I should read the documentation as well...) The ftp address can be converted to the http address, just by replacing ftp:// by http://. ;) Give it a try to see if it works. Cheers, Leen

Russ, Go to your personal home directory and open .kde (hidden file) then to /share/apps/kabc In that directory see if there are any std.vcf files. They should still be there. If they are you can rebuild your addressbook contacts by right-clicking on them and using the file manager to restore them. Hope it works for you. Bob S.

tried to change installation directory in yast. no matter what server is entered, the following error message always comes out: "Unable to create installation source from URL 'ftp://129.79.5.130/' Details: ERROR (InstSrc:E_no_instsrc_on_media) Try again? This is the latest server I tried. It is the server where i ftp'd my 9.0 and 9.1 installations: My working installation source *is* the same server, it just points to/linux/suse/suse/i386/9.1 (or 9.0 in my 9.0 installation) the kde 3.3 dir is /linux/suse/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.1,(9.0 for 9.0) i KNOW that: I dl'd the files from that directory and did a successful manual install on 9.0, i would just like to do 9.1 thru yast. I could not even edit the path in the one working installation source entry, got the same message again! any ideas? Does yast prevent adding / editing an install directory in the download version? tia

Try adding yast-source to the path. /linux/suse/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.1,/yast-source. Rich -- Rich Matson Reno, Nv. USA
