I believe you are using the old 2.4.x commands. The commands for the 2.6.x kernel are different... # make && make modules_install
...At least I know that works on my Gento system (I have never built a 2.6.x kernel on SuSE, but the commands are universal).
No I am following the procedure detailed in the README and README.SUSE files in /usr/src/linux.
