This is my first posting on this list. SuSE 9.1 Pro - kernel = 2.6.5-7.111 I am trying to rebuild my kernel by doing the following : a. cd /usr/src/linux b. make mrproper c. make cloneconfig d. edit '.config' and change CONFIG_CFGNAME to "optimal" e. make xconfig f. make g. make install h. make modules_install At this point I find the the directory /lib/modules/2.6.5-7.11-optimal/kernel has no files. I therefore cannot execute the next command 'mkinitrd'. The problem is step (d) above. I change this so that the original default kernel is left intact. If I do not do step (d) then the make process completes successfully except that the initrd file generated is faulty. are there any workarounds ? As far as I'm aware, I don't think the "make modules" step is necessary for a 2.6 kernel, as the "make" step takes care of that. No. make takes care of everything. typing 'make help' details what is done when either 'make' or 'make all' is executed. The progress messages that result from the make step indicate that the modules are being remade. The 2.4 kernel required the steps you suggest - 2.6 does not seem to... Also you can change directory (cd) to the source in /usr/src/linux (if linked to it) and read the README file "less README". Remember you will need to be "root" to completely build and install a new kernel Found last night that 2.6.9 fails to install a nvidia.ko module so NVidia's file will fail. Yes, but I Gave a patch yesterday on the nvnews linux forum : http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=34004&goto=newpost and it works with 2.6.9-bk7 OT : for those who use bootsplash, I've a bootsplash patch working with the same kernel. Michel.

You'd need to rebuild the kernel with the new init.c file. Regards Sid.
Yes, but it is not suffisant with 2.6.9-bk7, you need another patch which I spoke of above. Michel.

You are starting a new thread in the middle of another thread. This is called 'thread hijacking' ;), and it disrupts the threading, because your reply references to the message you're replying to. Please start a new thread with the 'New message' command, not by replying to a message and changing the subject.

I assume you want to mount a remote samba directory to a local directory? mount -t smbfs service mount_point I suppose you could also put an entry in your fstab, and put a (link to) scrip that mounts the share in your KDE Autostart directory. *** But do you *really* need this? In Konqueror you can use the smb:// protocol to access a windows share. I do not have a windows machine at hand, but if I start samba on my other pc, I can access the shares with: smb://10.0.0.1/ For 10.0.0.1, you should substitute the hostname or internet address of the windows(?) machine where the share is on. Hope this helps, Cheers, Leen

I think add specified mounted drive in /etc/fstab or /etc/samba/smbfstab is better then just doing in konqueror, cause AFAIK in konqueror you have to submit username and password everytime you enter directory. -- Arie Reynaldi Zanahar reymanx at gmail.com http://www.reynaldi.com
