.... I actually read the ATI installation stuff. Yes I know that you need to use |*fglrxconfig *|to set it up and I did manage to wade through it.. But the ATI installation info doesn't say you can't use yast.
Searching through the email data month by month is not the easiest way to go. Does SUSE have a email search function? I couldn't figure it out. Some people are new to this. ============== tb, If you don't know where to look for the searchable mail archives, ask,

You come off appearing that you know more than you do, but if you don't ask the question, we can't answer it. Once you use any of the standard setup tools, it returns the system back to the state it started, thus mucking up the ATI installation. The 9600 is supported natively by SuSE 9.0, so there is no real need to use the ATI drivers as the kernel module is already present for 3d and using the card.
I guess that is why the card was detected at install and immediately did a black screen. So I don't know what supported means. After re-boot with the big red switch, at least something came up on the screen. But the keyboard and other settings were not done correctly. Probably because of the crash. After fiddling, the screen stayed up, but the 3d did not work after the initial install. So if this is supported I don't know what not supported means. ========== tb, Sounds as if you are not sure what a lot of things mean and you seem hesitant to ask. Instead you just hope rude responses will get you results. As you can see from other replies, that doesn't work so well. So take a deep breath, count to 10 and ask your questions. If you are not sure what to ask, then say so and most here will try to be helpful. I will assume that when you say detected, you mean it started with the install screen and then went blank? Probably a problem somewhere else if that was the case. Who makes your card? Is it ATI or just ATI graphic chip?
You might try removing the ATI rpm and dropping down to init 3 to use sax2, but it's a good possibility you have things wanky trying to mix the two. Nice thing about Linux is that it can be fixed.
Don't have a clue what you are talking about here. How do I remove the new ATI driver? SUSE just said get the latest driver from ATI and hasn't returned my inquiry what to do next. ========= tb, Yes, I would probably agree with you, you are clueless. Did your SuSE 9.0 not have manuals? Did you read those as well as you did the ATI instructions? If you installed via RPM, then you can uninstall with RPM. If not certain, the do "man rpm" from a shell/konsole. To speed
BTW windowsXP loves the same card on the same machine and it preforms flawlessly.
But then again maybe just taking the whole pile back to BB would be better.

[...] things up, try "rpm -e" ! ---------- list, but a Linux list. All the ATI cards work as well in Linux too, if setup correctly and you don't have to install 100mb of driver software to get it to either! ATI supports and works with Linux probably closer than any other graphics card maker right now, so even though they might not answer your mails, they do support Linux. If you don't feel you are ready for the elegance of Linux yet, then stay with your winXP, but you'll be missing out on a lot of nice things if you do.
